AIN’T TOO PROUD Musical: Broadway. San Jose, the theater hub of Northern California, is preparing to host a mesmerizing event that will leave people speechless. From Oct 31 to Nov 5, 2023, “AIN’T TOO PROUD” will tour the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. This edition will take you on a musical journey, showcasing The Temptations’ rise to success.
Imagine Detroit streets, talented musicians, and a route to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Temptations dominated the charts with their iconic dance moves and harmonies. They had 42 songs in the top ten, 14 of which were number one. In 2017, Billboard named them the best R&B group ever. Their past is epic, but it was challenging to reach this point.
During social unrest in the U.S., The Temptations also faced personal and political issues that could have caused their breakup. Their wins, failures, and problems create a thrilling tale of friendship, family, loyalty, and betrayal. All while their top songs play.
“AIN’T TOO PROUD” broke attendance records at Berkeley Rep, The Kennedy Center, C.T.G.’s Ahmanson Theatre, and Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre before touring nationally. The March 2019 Broadway debut was terrific. It played at the Imperial Theatre, sold out, and set box office records.
An intelligent group made the show. “AIN’T TOO PROUD” written by Dominique Morisseau, Kennedy Prize winner for Best Play. Directed by Des McAnuff, a two-time Tony winner, and danced by Sergio Trujillo, a two-time Tony winner. People across the country will want to see this show.

Robert Brill, Tony nominee for set design; Paul Tazewell, Tony winner for costume design; Howell Binkley, Tony winner for lighting design; Steve Canyon Kennedy, Tony winner for sound design; Peter Nigrini, Drama Desk winner for projection design, and Charles G. LaPointe, Drama Desk winner for projection design, are also on the creative team.
