AJ Styles Confirms Retirement Plans Within the Next Year

Published:

WWE veteran AJ Styles has confirmed he plans to retire from active wrestling within the next year. In a recent interview with Tokyo Sports, the 48-year-old former world champion expressed his intention to leave the ring before his physical condition prevents him from performing at the high level that has defined his career for over two decades. This announcement brings clarity to ongoing speculation about his future and highlights the imminent conclusion of a legendary run in professional wrestling.

Reasons Behind the Decision and Future Involvement

Styles explained that his decision stems from a desire to avoid presenting a diminished version of himself to the audience.

“I don’t want to expose the ‘not-AJ-Styles version of myself’ to the fans. That’s the main reason. I decided to retire before my body stops working,”

he said. Though he aims to retire soon, Styles intends to stay within the wrestling business, potentially shifting into roles such as training or coaching to help nurture upcoming talent in WWE.

Upcoming Matches and Farewell Appearances in Japan and Australia

Earlier this month, Styles hinted at retirement with a symbolic hourglass post on social media, sparking fan speculation. Now confirmed, his pending retirement countdown has commenced. He is expected to participate in WWE’s live events in Japan on October 17 and 18, which he suggests may be his final matches in a country where he gained significant international acclaim.

“I’m really excited. I think this will probably be my last match in Japan, so I’m really looking forward to it,”

Styles stated.

“I plan to retire soon, and I might not come back to Japan [again] before that.”

Before those matches, Styles will headline a major bout against John Cena on October 11 at WWE Crown Jewel in Perth, Australia, reigniting a celebrated rivalry that has captivated fans worldwide.

Career Highlights and Legacy in Wrestling

AJ Styles’ career boasts numerous milestones across multiple major wrestling organizations. Before joining WWE in 2016, he was a foundational figure for TNA Wrestling, instrumental in defining its X Division and earning multiple world championship titles. His time in New Japan Pro-Wrestling included two IWGP Heavyweight Championship reigns and leadership of the influential Bullet Club faction. Since transitioning to WWE, Styles has maintained his elite status with several world title reigns and memorable matches against top-tier opponents.

The End of an Era for an Iconic Performer

Recognized as one of the most respected and impactful wrestlers of his generation, AJ Styles’ retirement marks a significant moment in professional wrestling history. Fans across the globe will soon have their final opportunity to witness his in-ring performances as this farewell tour unfolds, closing the chapter on a remarkable and influential career that has spanned continents and captivated audiences worldwide.
