After a long and successful wrestling career, AJ Styles retired from in-ring competition in January, following his loss to Gunther at the Royal Rumble event. Since stepping away from active wrestling, Styles has taken on a new position within WWE that focuses on identifying and supporting emerging wrestlers, revealing his transition during an appearance on The Phenomenally Retro Podcast. This new role involves evaluating talent both online and within the company to help improve their skills and career prospects.
Responsibilities in Talent Evaluation and Support
AJ Styles detailed that part of his job is to scout wrestling talent through internet footage and other sources. He explained,
“I’m on the internet checking out talent because it’s kind of part of my job with WWE now. I’m looking for talent and I’m looking to see what I can do, if I can do anything for them. If they can get better, little things like that because if there’s the possibility of them maybe get a WWE ID or something like that, then hopefully I can facilitate in getting that to happen.”
In addition to scouting independent wrestlers, Styles also keeps in contact with WWE’s NXT and main roster performers. He mentioned plans to meet with talent at an upcoming Monday Night RAW in Seattle to discuss their development and motivation.
“Sometimes you need to talk to somebody to see how they’re feeling and maybe they want to go down to the PC, and they want to work on some stuff. I’m that guy. That’s what I’m there for,”
he stated.
Focus on Enhancing Morale and Adapting the Role
Styles sees his position as more than just talent evaluation; he wants to maintain a positive atmosphere among performers and encourage their growth. He shared,
“The morale, if I could help make sure it’s still there in a good way, I want to be that guy. There’s a lot of things that I’m gonna be doing, and as things come up, it’ll change. I’m sure the job will, but as of right now, that’s kind of what I’m doing.”
This new scouting and mentoring role reflects WWE’s interest in utilizing the experience of retired stars like AJ Styles to strengthen their developmental system and ensure a steady pipeline of capable wrestlers for future events. As Styles adapts to his backstage responsibilities, his insights and direct communication with talent could have a significant impact on both up-and-coming and established performers within WWE’s ranks.
