Batista Explains Why He Passed on John Cena’s Peacemaker Role

Published:

Dave Batista revealed that he was initially slated to play the lead character in James Gunn’s Peacemaker television series, a role that eventually went to fellow WWE star John Cena. The change came about due to scheduling conflicts that prevented Batista from committing to the project.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Batista said that Gunn had originally written the part with him in mind. However, overlapping commitments forced him to decline the opportunity.

Scheduling Conflicts and Batista’s Regret

Batista explained,

“I have to say, that one. I really wanted to do that part. He (Gunn) wrote that part for me, and it was meant for me, and it just became a scheduling thing where I just couldn’t do it, because I was doing Army of the Dead. And so it was a scheduling issue that we just could not figure out,”

highlighting how his work on another project made it impossible to take on the Peacemaker role.

Despite his disappointment, Batista expressed a sense of relief and respect for Cena’s portrayal, recognizing that the character suited his former WWE rival uniquely well.

Batista Praises Cena’s Performance as Peacemaker

Reflecting on Cena’s success, Batista said,

“And I think it was great. It was a blessing in disguise that I didn’t do that, because I have to say, I have to be honest, there’s no way that I would have been able to do that role like John. He’s just perfect for it, you know, and I wouldn’t have done it justice, and it wouldn’t have been as successful. So, look, and I am, I’m saying that with a bit of envy, you know, I would love it. I just wouldn’t have been able to do the same thing that John does to bring to that character. It wouldn’t have been the same. It wouldn’t have been as good. I can honestly say it wouldn’t have been as good,”

acknowledging Cena’s distinct fit for the character.

The series itself became a major success on HBO Max and expanded James Gunn’s vision for the DC Extended Universe, with Cena’s role as Christopher Smith—or Peacemaker—receiving widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike.

The Role’s Impact on the DC Universe and Beyond

Peacemaker’s popularity has elevated the profile of this offbeat character within the DC franchise. Batista’s initial attachment and subsequent passing of the role underscore the challenges actors face when juggling multiple projects. Meanwhile, Cena’s performance has become a defining part of the show’s identity, drawing praise for its complexity and humor.

Looking ahead, the show’s continuing success indicates that John Cena’s portrayal of Peacemaker will remain a highlight within the DC universe, while Batista’s involvement in other projects like Army of the Dead ensures both stars maintain strong presences in entertainment beyond their WWE roots.
