AEW World Tag Team Champion Bobby Lashley recently explained why MJF was removed from The Hurt Syndicate shortly after joining the faction. Lashley pointed to trust concerns and differing career goals as key reasons for the split, shedding light on the decision during a recent podcast appearance. The discussion highlighted how personal dynamics within the group shaped the creative direction of the storyline.
Lashley Recalls the Original Hurt Business in WWE
Reflecting on his time with the original Hurt Business in WWE, Lashley described the unity and chemistry the group shared, which has influenced his cautious approach with the current faction. He praised his former teammates, Shelton Benjamin and Cedric, for their strong presence and professionalism, indicating that their commitment set a high bar for any new member. Lashley said,
“When we had the Hurt Business originally… it was the realest thing I’ve been through in pro wrestling,”
and further added,
“It was a big deal, and it was a big deal because of who I was doing it with. Shelton Benjamin has been on top of the business forever… Cedric, the same thing. He was amazing… We all formed together to push each other.”
Trust Issues Led to MJF’s Removal from the Group
Lashley admitted his initial hesitation to include MJF in AEW’s version of the Hurt Syndicate stemmed from a lack of trust. He emphasized how important trust is for preserving the integrity of the faction’s core. Lashley remarked,
“Whoever we bring in, I’m going to be very protective of that core. With that being said, with MJF, I gave him the thumbs down because if I don’t trust you, that’s a big deal for me. I didn’t trust him, bringing him in originally.”
Diverging Paths Caused the Group’s Split
Lashley explained that MJF’s focus on his own ambitions created a gap between him and the rest of the group. He noted the faction was moving collectively forward, while MJF’s individual goals led him in a different direction. Lashley stated,

“Since we’ve gotten in, I see he’s focused on his own path. Instead of having to stay with us and now we’re all moving in different directions, I was like, ‘Just go on your own path.’ You go on your path and we’ll go on ours. We’ll both be super successful. He’s very successful in AEW and I have no ill will towards him. He’s amazing. We have a different path than he does.”
Maintaining Professional Respect Amid the Separation
Although MJF’s involvement in The Hurt Syndicate was brief, Lashley made it clear there is no personal resentment. The decision was rooted in professional differences rather than conflict. Lashley’s explanation suggests that both parties are poised to continue thriving in AEW, just along separate routes. This development underscores the importance Lashley places on trust and alignment within his faction, setting expectations for the Hurt Syndicate’s future direction.
