New information from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has shed light on Brock Lesnar’s WWE contract status during his two-year absence, revealing that the former champion was actually a free agent for several months before his surprising return at SummerSlam 2025. This development clarifies what many fans had speculated about Lesnar’s position with WWE during his time away.
Contract Timeline and Payment Arrangements Explained
According to journalist Dave Meltzer, Lesnar continued to receive payments under his previous WWE contract even after the company stopped featuring him on television. Eventually, that agreement expired, making him a free agent until he inked a new deal for his comeback. Meltzer stated,
“A correction regarding Brock Lesnar. Lesnar actually just signed a new contract to return,”
and added,
“He was getting paid on his prior contract long after they stopped using him, but that deal did expire and he actually was a free agent for months until the new deal was signed.”
Why WWE Could Not Extend Lesnar’s Original Contract
The report also clarifies why WWE was unable to freeze or extend Lesnar’s previous contract, as they have done with other wrestlers during injuries. Since Lesnar was not sidelined due to injury and his absence was the company‘s choice—partly influenced by his association with the Janel Grant lawsuit—WWE lacked the legal authority to prolong his contract. This distinction was crucial in allowing Lesnar to remain unsigned for an extended period.
Lesnar’s Surprise Return and Upcoming Appearances
Lesnar made a dramatic return at the SummerSlam event on August 3, 2025, ambushing John Cena after the main event to revive their intense rivalry. WWE’s legal team reportedly gave clearance for Lesnar’s comeback about a month prior, ensuring the decision remained confidential until the event. His new contract reportedly covers a limited number of dates, continuing the pattern of his part-time involvement with WWE.
Lesnar’s next scheduled match is a singles contest against Cena at the inaugural WrestlePalooza event set for September 20 in Indianapolis. In addition, he is expected to appear on the upcoming Friday Night SmackDown in Chicago, further escalating anticipation for their renewed rivalry.
