Chelsea Green has shared candid reflections on the difficult road that led her to her current status in WWE, highlighting the struggles that shaped her career. Now recognized as a prominent figure on Friday Night SmackDown, Green’s climb to becoming a multi-time champion was marked by numerous obstacles and setbacks.
Her early experiences included proving herself in independent wrestling circuits and promotions like TNA, before facing the challenge of being released by WWE in 2020 after two years with the company. Like her husband Matt Cardona, who also navigated a complex return to WWE, Green’s persistence and resilience have been instrumental in her comeback story.
Reflecting on the Difficulties of Returning to WWE
In an interview with Denise Salcedo, Chelsea Green discussed how unexpected her journey has been and the hardships she endured along the way. She described conversations with Cardona, marveling at how their careers intertwined over nearly a decade, with various firings and rehiring moments leading to her current accomplishments.
Green said,
“It’s so crazy, Matt (Cardona) and I were just talking about, we would have never guessed, when we first met nine, almost 10 years ago, that when I was at TNA and he was at WWE, then I would get to WWE, then he would get fired, then I would get fired, then I would get hired and he wouldn’t get hired, years later he would get hired and I would be a double champion and all my dreams would be coming true and I’d travel the world and I represent the company.”
She emphasized the difficulty of her climb:
“All these things are so crazy but I do feel like the journey to get here was so hard, that now that I’m here there’s not one person in this world that can say I didn’t work for it.”
Chelsea contrasted her path with others in wrestling who rise swiftly, saying,
“There’s a lot of chosen ones in wrestling, you see that happen, the machine has scooped you up and thrust you to the top, it’s amazing and some unbelievable stars come from it. But for me, my story is so different and relatable and I didn’t get everything handed to me, I was told no so many times.”
Finding Her Unique Place in Wrestling
Despite setbacks, Green found a way to carve out her niche, which has resonated strongly with fans who see her as relatable and authentic. She reflected on being frequently underestimated but ultimately defining her own path:

“There were a lot of people that told me there was nothing unique about me, and I figured out my niche and I think that’s really special and that’s what fans kind of attach to, like she is one of us.”
She further explained her appeal, stating,
“When I go home, and I take my make-up off and I blend in at publics when I’m shopping for my groceries, I am just a normal girl. There isn’t necessarily anything special about me, but that’s what makes me special, is the relatability I think.”
