Chelsea Green Opens Up on WWE: Unreal Netflix Series—The Raw, Unfiltered Journey Behind the Curtain

Published:

WWE has teamed up with Netflix to launch a new limited original series, WWE: Unreal, premiering on July 29th. The show offers an unprecedented look into the behind-the-scenes world of WWE, revealing the creative efforts that shape the live entertainment experience beloved by millions. Chelsea Green WWE Unreal is a central focus, as the former Women’s United States Champion shares her candid perspective on the realities of being a WWE Superstar.

Revealing the Reality Behind WWE’s Curtain

For decades, professional wrestling has maintained a veil of secrecy, protecting the inner workings and creative decisions from the public to preserve the magic and mystery that fans enjoy. Although documentaries like Beyond The Mat and Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows offered some insight, WWE: Unreal marks the first time WWE has granted such open, unfiltered access to the intricate creative process that drives the organization.

Chelsea Green expressed enthusiasm rather than apprehension about revealing her life on camera, highlighting her consistent openness over the past decade. For her, participating in the Netflix series felt like a natural extension of how she lives her life.

“I was excited because I love reality TV. I love pulling back the curtain. I’m one of those people where when I watch a murder mystery, I’m going and reading all about the case. I’m watching a movie and I’m looking up what the characters do in real life. So I’m pulling back the curtain every single day for all the shows I’m watching. Then on top of that, I’ve been very open. There’s been no curtain in my life to pull back because for 10 years, I’ve let you guys in on my life, my marriage, my family, everything. So it felt obvious for me to do this. It was easy.”

While WWE Superstars are familiar with cameras following them during performances, documenting personal lives presents a different kind of exposure. Green acknowledged she welcomed the behind-the-scenes filming confidently, knowing she had nothing to conceal.

“If I was trying to hide part of my life, it would be overwhelming. But because I just allowed myself to be 100 me without any filters, and I told them that. When they called me and asked me if I wanted to do it, I said, ‘Absolutely, but I’m not filtering myself. So that means that you’ll have to. If you want me filtered, you’re going to have to do that in post-production.’ But honestly, Omaha Productions and the team, Chris Weaver, the producer, the director, they were all so amazing and became my friends. I am just an open book by nature. So once I got to know them, there was really nothing I needed to hide.”

The Demanding Life of a WWE Superstar On and Off the Ring

Unlike traditional sports leagues such as the NFL or NBA, WWE functions year-round without an off-season, showcasing wrestling entertainment globally every day. Even during the challenging landscape of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, WWE adapted by hosting events at their Performance Center without audiences and innovating with the ThunderDome concept through mid-2021 to keep fans engaged.

This relentless schedule demands peak effort from every WWE Superstar, a commitment Chelsea Green emphasizes as going well beyond typical sports expectations.

“I think the most important thing for me is just that people understand the grind of professional wrestling. I feel like there’s so much respect surrounding professional sports, especially men in professional sports, the NFL, the NBA, the MLB, whatever, the NHL. But we don’t have an offseason. We are doing exactly what they do, except for bigger crowds on live television with huge viewerships, huge. We are competing with the NFL for the top viewership, and we’re doing that 365 days a year. We don’t get [an] off season. We don’t get to have the All-Star Week where we take two weeks off and go to the Bahamas. I would love that. But we don’t.”

Netflix and WWE entered a significant 10-year, $500 million deal beginning in 2024, featuring Monday Night Raw on the streaming platform. This collaboration dramatically expands access to WWE’s flagship show, allowing current audiences easier viewing options and attracting new fans worldwide. Chelsea Green expressed hope for additional Netflix projects in the future, including opportunities beyond wrestling, such as hosting roles.

“I would love to host some Netflix shows. Look, if there’s a Netflix Christmas movie that they want me to star in, I will go. I’ll do it. Twist my rubber arm. I’ll do it. But I think my journey within also staying as a wrestler, I would love to explore hosting. WWE gave me the chance to interview Ana de Armas for the new John Wick movie, Ballerina. It was, oh, my gosh. It was thrilling. It was scary. I had never done anything like that before. I was learning something new. I was so nervous, but it sparked something in me. So Netflix, if you want me to host a little love reality TV show, I’m here.”

Chelsea Green Reflects on Her Wrestling Journey

Since her return to WWE in 2023, Chelsea Green has made significant strides, earning acclaim for her compelling character work, notably inspired by her “Karen” persona. Her success peaked with winning the Women’s United States Championship at December’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, an achievement reflecting her hard-earned rise.

Green has witnessed the growth of a devoted fanbase that embraces her characters, often dressing like her and demonstrating strong support at shows.

“They’re making my skirts. They’re buying my hats. They’re wearing my merch. They’re doing this. They’re bringing American flags to shows. All of that stuff was really mind-blowing because it’s taken me forever to get here. I’ve had a ton of different characters, but I’ve never held onto a character long enough for people to grasp and then emulate. So that was really interesting. I don’t know if you see that in Unreal, but you see that on my social media because I do try to post it whenever I’m at meet and greets. If there are people dressed as me, bet I will be taking a photo of you to show my husband later that night and post on social media.”

Her ascent has been far from straightforward, involving stints with multiple promotions such as Shimmer, TNA, and Lucha Underground. After leaving WWE and returning, she credits her fans for their unwavering support throughout her decade-long career.

“All of the fans, they paid attention for 10 years. They know that I started in Vancouver and I wrestled for 10 to 20 people every night. They know that I struggled to get on Tough Enough, that I struggled to get visas to live in America, that I wrestled for Shimmer and was a part of a tag team, that I went to TNA, that I wanted a title when I had no right winning a title. I was so new, and they still supported me. Then they supported me through All In and Lucha Underground and NXT, and now I’m here.”

For Green, the value is found not solely in the achievements at the destination, but rather in every obstacle overcome during the journey. She encourages others to appreciate every experience as a vital part of their unique story.

“I just want to scream from the rooftops like, ‘The journey is so much more important than the end goal.’ It’s so good to have goals, obviously. Of course. You always want to set goals, and you want to manifest and think positively and everything. But at the end of the day, all those speed bumps are what makes the story unique to you. When you have your moment, your time to shine, when you’re winning the United States Championship in Long Island in front of your friends and family, everyone is cheering for you because of the previous 10 years that they rode with you on this ride for.”
