Chris Jericho’s WWE Return as GM Could Shake Up RAW and SmackDown

Published:

Chris Jericho might be making a comeback to WWE, not as a wrestler, but in a significant non-wrestling capacity, according to insights from a former WWE writer. This possibility has sparked notable discussion around his future, especially considering the unsettled nature of WWE’s current programming.

On a recent episode of Legion of RAW aired on Sportskeeda WrestleBinge, Vince Russo shared his perspective on Jericho’s rumored WWE return. Russo suggested that Jericho could take on a special role within WWE rather than return to active competition in the ring.

Concerns over WWE’s Current Star Power and Entertainment Value

Russo expressed frustration with WWE’s present lack of compelling storylines and captivating characters, attributing this downturn to a shortage of impactful top-tier stars. According to him, this shortage is why the company’s shows have lost much of their entertainment appeal.

“Because there’s no stars man. There’s nobody that means anything. That’s why.”

This comment reflects the perception that WWE is struggling to maintain viewer interest due to a thin roster of meaningful talent headlining its shows.

Jericho’s Potential Role as General Manager for Both RAW and SmackDown

Speculation about Jericho’s future also revolves around whether he will renew his contract with AEW or return to WWE once his AEW contract expires. Vince Russo proposed that instead of continuing as a wrestler, Jericho could serve as the general manager for WWE’s two flagship programs, RAW and SmackDown.

Currently, these roles are held by Nick Aldis and Adam Pearce, who perform as babyface characters—something Russo openly criticizes. He has suggested alternative creative directions, including turning these characters heel. However, he believes having Jericho as GM and Aldis focusing on wrestling would improve the shows‘ quality.

“I would like to see Jericho involved there as the GM of both shows. Now, you’ve got something. Put Nick Aldis on the roster, let him wrestle. Let Jericho be the general manager. Now you can do something entertaining.”

Jericho’s Time Away and Possible Homecoming

Chris Jericho hasn’t appeared in WWE since 2018, with his last in-ring appearance being at the Greatest Royal Rumble event where he was eliminated. Following that, Jericho transitioned to wrestling on independent circuits before becoming one of AEW’s prominent figures since 2019 under Tony Khan’s leadership.

Should his AEW contract come to an end, a return to WWE would mark a notable homecoming after more than seven years away. Such a move would have major implications for WWE, potentially reinvigorating its main roster and altering the dynamics of both RAW and SmackDown.
