Cody Rhodes Reveals True Reasons Behind AEW Departure: “I Felt Disrespected and Wouldn’t Stand for It”

Published:

In a recent conversation featured on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Cody Rhodes shared insights into his departure from AEW, addressing the complex mixture of emotions involved. He explained that his decision to leave stemmed from feelings of disrespect toward something he helped create alongside close friends, contrasting this with his previous experiences at WWE. The discussion sheds light on the motives behind the Cody Rhodes AEW departure reasons.

Disrespect in AEW Versus WWE

Rhodes compared his time at WWE to being part of a large, corporate environment, likening it to the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball—an established entity where he was just another figure in the system. However, he made clear that feeling undervalued at AEW, a promotion he helped build with Matt Jackson, Kenny Omega, and Nick Jackson, was a far more personal issue. He stated,

“But feeling disrespected at something I built with my friends…that we built, feeling disrespected there…I wouldn’t stand for it,”

emphasizing his unwillingness to tolerate such treatment.

The Role of Personal Relationships and Future Ambitions

Rhodes also highlighted the support and importance of his wife, Brandi, in his decision-making process. He remarked,

“I think with Brandi and I both…I’m so blessed to have her. It was one of those where it was like, ‘F*ck it.’ I did way more here than you think and you’re going to find out the moment I’m out the door.”

Reflecting on his creative direction with the American Nightmare character, Rhodes expressed frustration over limitations imposed in AEW despite the potential he saw. He added,

“I don’t believe in the cold-hearted back-stabby type of revenge. The greatest revenge on Earth is success. And, I felt like we were sitting on something wonderful, something great…if I’m not doing to do it in the house I literally with Matt (Jackson), Kenny (Omega) and Nick (Jackson) built? Then, buddy, I’m going elsewhere.”

Impact on AEW and Career Trajectory

Cody Rhodes and Brandi made their departure from AEW public in early 2022 before he returned to WWE and debuted at WrestleMania against Seth Rollins. Both Rhodes and AEW president Tony Khan have maintained a quiet stance on the specifics of his exit. As Rhodes prepares to face John Cena for the championship at SummerSlam’s second night, the revelations on his AEW departure offer a clearer understanding of the personal and professional factors that prompted his exit. His story reflects the challenges faced by founders balancing creative control and respect within rapidly evolving wrestling promotions.
