WWE star Cody Rhodes, known as “The American Nightmare,” recently shared his enthusiasm for participating in unique and challenging gimmick matches during an interview on WFAN. Rhodes highlighted his particular fascination with the Cody Rhodes first blood match and other high-risk match types he would like to see in WWE’s future events.
Rhodes explained his attraction to first blood matches, emphasizing the strategic elements and the careful psychology involved in performing them safely. In his words,
“For me, I’d be interested in a first blood match. The psychology in how you do it and wrestle is really fun. I loved first blood matches. They left a lot of ways you can do it and keep guys whole.”
He noted that the format allows for creative storytelling while minimizing serious injury.
While Rhodes expressed enthusiasm for certain match types, he ruled out the dog collar match because of the potential risks to the neck. Instead, he focused on his curiosity for a barbed wire rope match, referencing the dangerous style seen in earlier wrestling eras.
“I used to love when they would do the ropes in barbed wire. Dusty (Rhodes) and Tully (Blanchard). The danger. WWE has done the inferno match with the fire. The danger of getting close. It’s a competitor’s dream,”
he stated, reflecting on the thrill and risks such matches present.
Rhodes admitted that the barbed wire rope match would need a new name in the current wrestling landscape, as it does not fit the typical street fight category. His comments suggest that while these matches involve substantial danger, they continue to inspire competitors aiming to elevate their performances in WWE’s evolving roster of showdowns.
