Women’s Tag Team Champion IYO SKY recently shared insights into her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training sessions with former WWE star Shayna Baszler. Speaking in a conversation on Ring The Belle, SKY discussed her ongoing efforts to improve in combat sports under Baszler’s guidance.
Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from a Skilled Mentor
IYO SKY explained that despite her dedication, she has not yet defeated Shayna Baszler during their training matches, largely because Baszler’s strength and technique give her a clear advantage. SKY said,
“Yeah, she always beats me up with jiu-jitsu. She’s so strong, she’s my teacher, so that’s why.”
She also emphasized the competitive spirit within their sessions, adding,
“I’ve never beaten her, but I always struggle, like ‘I don’t want to lose to you, Shayna!’”
Alongside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, SKY mentioned she is also practicing kickboxing, saying,
“I’m enjoying jiu-jitsu, and I’m also doing kickboxing.”
This highlights her focus on diversifying her combat training to enhance overall skills.
Progress and Relationship with Shayna Baszler
Sky earned her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt in December, marking a significant milestone in her martial arts journey. She trains under Baszler at RUDOS BJJ, benefiting from the extensive combat sports experience Baszler brings, both from MMA and professional wrestling backgrounds.
Shayna Baszler, known as one of the MMA Horsewomen, recently discussed the possibility of returning to MMA competition. Despite departing WWE in July 2025, she continues to maintain a strong relationship with WWE and occasionally works as a guest coach when invited.
Baszler also recently put herself forward as a candidate to replace Ava as NXT General Manager, highlighting her ongoing involvement behind the scenes in WWE. This connection supports IYO SKY’s continued access to advanced training and mentorship from one of the sport’s respected veterans.
The Impact of Training on SKY’s Wrestling Career
IYO SKY’s commitment to improving her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills under Shayna Baszler’s tutelage reflects her drive to excel both inside and outside the wrestling ring. The combination of in-ring performance and combat sport training promises to strengthen her presence as a champion and competitor.
With Baszler’s mentorship, SKY is developing techniques that could influence her wrestling style, ensuring she remains a formidable figure in WWE’s women’s division. The ongoing training highlights the significance of cross-discipline skills in modern professional wrestling and MMA alike.
