John Cena More Involved Than Randy Orton in WWE Release Drama

Published:

John Cena and Randy Orton were among the most prominent figures on WWE RAW during the previous era. Despite their success, tension existed as both did not get along with Mr. Kennedy, the former United States Champion. Kennedy later disclosed that John Cena played a considerably larger role in his WWE release compared to Randy Orton.

In 2009, Mr. Kennedy was unexpectedly released from WWE just four days after returning to television. Following a 10-man tag team match, Randy Orton reportedly lodged complaints with WWE management, which contributed to Kennedy’s departure. However, new revelations suggest Cena’s involvement in this situation was even more significant.

Mr. Anderson Discusses Cena and Orton’s Roles in the Controversy

On the podcast Mic Check with Mr. Anderson, the former TNA World Champion revisited the circumstances surrounding Kennedy’s release. Anderson pointed out that while many focused on Randy Orton’s role, John Cena’s influence was either just as substantial or possibly greater, despite Cena having been on Kennedy’s team during the match.

“I will say this: everybody always asks about the Randy Orton aspect of that story. John [Cena] was way more involved than Randy [Orton] or just as involved, I would say. So, I will say that,” Anderson said.

John Cena and Randy Orton’s Longstanding Rivalry in WWE

John Cena and Randy Orton have shared a lengthy history within WWE, both debuting in the same OVW class of 2002. Over the years, the two have built legendary careers under the previous management regime of the Stamford-based promotion. Their paths crossed many times, culminating in a notable encounter in May 2025.

At the Backlash event that year, Cena defended the Undisputed WWE Championship against Orton. The match stood out as it reversed their usual roles, with Cena playing the heel dubbed “The Franchise Player” and Orton performing as the heroic “The Viper.” Cena ultimately claimed victory in what was their final match against each other under the old regime.

Although both wrestlers have only a limited number of WWE dates remaining, there remains a possibility for them to reunite, potentially as tag team partners for one last outing inside the ring.

What This Means for WWE’s Future Storylines

The revelations about John Cena’s involvement in Mr. Kennedy’s release shed light on backstage dynamics and power struggles within WWE’s past structure. Understanding such incidents is crucial as WWE moves forward amid numerous transitions in talent and leadership. With Cena and Orton nearing the end of their WWE careers, the potential for revisiting their storylines as allies could offer fans meaningful closure.

This context also invites fans and industry observers to reassess past decisions and explore how relationships among top stars have influenced company direction, wrestler departures, and narrative developments.

As WWE evolves, the complex interactions between stars like Cena and Orton continue to shape both on-screen rivalries and behind-the-scenes developments.
