Kevin Owens has been sidelined since before WWE WrestleMania 41 due to a neck injury that prevented him from competing in a scheduled singles match against Randy Orton. Throughout late 2025, Owens shared updates on his progress, including a November video posted on Twitter showing his return to training, and footage of him working out at the WWE Performance Center. Despite these developments, his in-ring comeback remains uncertain, leaving fans eager yet anxious about his next steps.
Owens’ Unexpected Role at the 2026 Royal Rumble Event
In the lead-up to the 2026 Royal Rumble, speculation about Kevin Owens making a ring return has been widespread. However, SmackDown star Michin recently shattered those assumptions by announcing that Owens will instead be attending a Royal Rumble Watch Party event. Michin revealed on Twitter that both she and Owens will appear at Dave & Buster’s in Orlando, Florida, on the Saturday of the event, inviting fans to join them in supporting the show outside the ring.

Kevin Owens Reflects on the Current Independent Wrestling Scene
Aside from his WWE activities, Owens recently appeared on Cody Rhodes’ podcast,
“What Do You Wanna Talk About?”
, where he shared his perspective on the state of the independent wrestling scene. Owens admitted that changes within the industry and reduced personal time have distanced him from following independent wrestling closely. He expressed a sense of unfamiliarity with emerging talents, underscoring how many promising wrestlers have been signed to larger promotions in recent years.

I can’t tell you because I don’t follow it enough. I’m a huge wrestling fan and I try to follow as much wrestling as I can. Everything has changed so much. It almost feels, and I know I’m going to get in relative trouble for this with the fans. It almost feels like there is no independent scene anymore.
I know there is, I just don’t know enough about it because it’s just not what it used to be. A lot of it is because independent talents in the last few years have been signed. I’m not saying there are no independent standouts, I just don’t know them. Probably, a lot of it, is I have less time to pay attention to wrestling. I wish I had an answer, I really don’t. I don’t know who is out there.
Context and Implications Surrounding Owens’ 2026 Activities
Kevin Owens’ absence from active competition and appearance at the Royal Rumble Watch Party underscore his cautious approach amid ongoing recovery. This situation contributes to the uncertainty felt by WWE fans and observers who had anticipated his return inside the ring. His comments on the independent circuit also highlight challenges within the wrestling industry, as shifts in talent availability and personal commitments affect even seasoned performers like Owens.
As Owens remains connected to WWE and its events, his off-ring presence at a major show like the Royal Rumble may maintain his visibility while he continues to rehabilitate. This cautious reentry could influence how WWE utilizes him in the coming months, potentially affecting storylines and audience expectations leading up to WrestleMania 42 and beyond.
