Nearly a year ago, Kevin Owens announced he would miss WrestleMania 41 due to a severe neck injury, leading to a neck fusion surgery last July. Since then, Owens has been undergoing recovery as doctors assess the extent of the surgery and his prospects for returning to wrestling.
Initially uncertain about the severity of the damage, Owens later revealed that the condition of his neck was actually the most favorable outcome expected from this kind of procedure. Although typical healing from a neck fusion can take six months to a year, Owens faces a potentially longer recovery given the demanding physical nature of professional wrestling.
In an August public update, Owens expressed caution about his future in the ring, acknowledging the unpredictability of the healing process.
“We have to see how the bones fuse,”
Owens said during a Q & A session.
“Some guys had success, some guys didn’t. Fingers crossed I get to come back to wrestling in the next year. Really don’t know, though. My goal is to come back. Hopefully that’s what happens.”
Since then, Owens has made a few appearances related to WWE, including attending John Cena‘s retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December. The two former rivals shared a handshake and a hug before Cena faced Gunther, marking a touching moment in Owens’ ongoing recovery journey.
Expected Timeline and WWE’s Outlook on Owens’ Return
Owens has participated in promotional activities for WWE 2K26 ahead of its release, but his return to active wrestling remains uncertain. WWE currently has no fixed date for his comeback, though sources close to the company remain hopeful that he will be cleared to compete sometime in 2026. A re-evaluation scheduled for this summer will determine his progress in healing and future readiness.
Sources indicate to Bodyslam that Kevin Owens is set to undergo re-evaluation this summer to see how things are coming along recovery wise. Another source indicates that WWE is hopeful that Owens will be able to return at some point in 2026.
Owens last performed at Elimination Chamber 2025, where he secured a win against Sami Zayn in an Unsanctioned Match. He was originally slated to face Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41 but was medically withdrawn. Orton faced then-TNA World Champion Joe Hendry in a substitute match during the event.
The Significance of Owens’ Recovery for WWE and Fans
Kevin Owens’ neck surgery recovery carries considerable importance for WWE, with his return potentially adding excitement and depth to future storylines. Fans and the wrestling community remain attentive as Owens continues to heal, hoping his recovery will allow him to resume performing with the intensity and charisma he is known for. The upcoming medical evaluation will be a key milestone in determining when Owens may safely return to the ring.
