Logan Paul’s Pokémon Card Sells for Record $16.5M

Logan Paul, the wrestling star and social media personality, has achieved a historic sale by auctioning his rare Pikachu Illustrator Pokémon card for $16.5 million in New York. The record-breaking auction concluded Monday at Goldin Auctions after more than a month of competitive bidding, establishing the highest price ever paid for a trading card.

Details of the Iconic Card and Auction

Paul originally purchased the coveted card in 2021 for $5.275 million, which was then the Guinness World Record for a Pokémon card purchase. The Pikachu Illustrator was created by Atsuko Nishida in 1998 as part of a contest, with only a few dozen known copies in existence. Notably, Paul’s card is the sole card to have received a perfect quality rating of 10. He even showcased the card during WrestleMania 38 in 2022, encased in a custom display and accompanied by a diamond necklace.

Verification and Winner of the Auction

Sarah Casson, an official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, was present at the auction’s conclusion to confirm that this amount sets a world record for any trading card sold at auction. The winning bidder was A.J. Scaramucci, a venture capitalist and son of former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci. After the sale, Paul handed the card to Scaramucci in a ceremony.

“Oh my gosh, this is crazy,”

Significance of the Sale for Collectors and the Market

This unprecedented sale highlights the expanding value and prestige of rare Pokémon cards among collectors and investors worldwide. It reflects the growing crossover appeal between entertainment figures and collectible markets. The sale’s impact may encourage increased interest and potentially higher valuations for other rare trading cards in upcoming auctions.
