Bobby Lashley’s current role in AEW might not have happened if MVP had not persuaded him to avoid re-signing with WWE. During a recent interview with James Varsallone, MVP shared that he was the key figure encouraging Lashley to take a different course. While still with WWE, MVP advised Lashley not to renew his contract after Shelton Benjamin’s release, suggesting instead they join AEW together.
How the Hurt Syndicate Came Together in AEW
MVP recalled the discussion with Lashley, saying,
“I told Bobby when we were still at WWE, I was the one that said, ‘Let’s not re-sign,’ because Shelton had been released. I said, ‘Don’t re-sign. I’m not going to re-sign. Let’s get together, get Shelton and go to AEW.’”
This marked the beginning of the Hurt Syndicate’s new chapter outside WWE. MVP explained the process of convincing Lashley, stating,
“It took a little convincing and Bobby came on board and Tony has been gracious enough to let us get the band back together and continue.”
AEW Success and Tony Khan’s Role
In 2024, Lashley, MVP, and Shelton Benjamin officially debuted in AEW. Lashley and Benjamin quickly found success by winning the AEW World Tag Team Championship. MVP expressed appreciation for AEW President Tony Khan, highlighting his supportive approach in giving the group a chance to fulfill their goals. This transition allowed the Hurt Syndicate to continue their legacy in a new environment, signaling a fresh start for the group within AEW’s competitive landscape.
