Paul Heyman appreciates that ECW continues to hold significance today, especially with its renewed recognition in wrestling culture. The inclusion of New Jack in WWE 2K25’s third DLC pack, the ‘Fearless Pack’, marks his first video game appearance since ECW Anarchy Rulz in 2000, underscoring ECW’s ongoing relevance. Heyman discussed this milestone and ECW’s broader cultural impact in a recent interview with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp.
New Jack’s Return Highlights ECW’s Growing Legacy
The decision to feature New Jack in WWE 2K25 reflects a shift in how ECW is perceived within the wrestling community. For many years following ECW’s closure, its influence was downplayed or dismissed. Heyman explained that for over a decade, efforts were made to deny ECW’s significance, even as WWE’s One Night Stand events celebrating ECW’s spirit were highly successful. WWE subsequently launched its own version of ECW in an attempt to overshadow the original.
Heyman emphasized the evolution of this perception, saying:
“It’s like asking the guys in NWA what it felt like when they did movie called Straight Out Of Compton. All of a sudden these rebels, these anti-society rebels, these renegades, these people that were looking through music to change society and have society conform to a different vision, all puns intended. ECW is now recognized for how relevant it was in the social curve of professional wrestling / sports entertainment and its contributions to the industry cannot be denied any further. People spent at least a decade after the death of ECW trying to deny the relevance to the point where when the One Night Stand shows were so successful, WWE practically launched a new ECW to kill the old ECW. Now, it’s more accepted. It’s more accepted for its historical significance. It’s more accepted for the cultural change that it brought to professional wrestling / sports entertainment. and, in hindsight, acknowledged, again all puns intended, and because of that you see New Jack, amongst others, in the game, and it’s an uninhibited version of New Jack, not a watered down censored version of New Jack.”

The Broader Impact on Professional Wrestling
This shift in perspective highlights how ECW’s rebellious spirit and innovative style paved the way for changes in professional wrestling and sports entertainment. The unfiltered portrayal of icons like New Jack in WWE 2K25 signals a willingness to embrace ECW’s raw authenticity. This acceptance marks a significant moment for the wrestling community to honor the cultural contributions ECW made in challenging norms and expanding the industry’s boundaries.
What This Means for Wrestling Fans and Future Media
For fans, seeing New Jack and other ECW personalities in WWE 2K25 serves as recognition of ECW’s lasting legacy. Heyman’s insights suggest that the wrestling world is increasingly acknowledging the importance of ECW’s history and its influence on contemporary wrestling styles and storytelling. Moving forward, this respect may lead to more authentic representations of ECW and its stars in future wrestling games and media.
