Powerhouse Hobbs’ WWE Debut Falls Flat Despite Hype

Powerhouse Hobbs officially debuted at the 2026 WWE Royal Rumble, marking his move from AEW to WWE. Despite the anticipation surrounding his arrival, the crowd’s response was lukewarm, and Hobbs’ performance in the men’s Royal Rumble match failed to leave a significant impression.

Criticism Surrounding WWE’s Handling of Hobbs’ Debut

Stevie Richards addressed the shortcomings of Hobbs’ introduction during an episode of The Stevie Richards Show. He remarked,

They probably were like, you know what, if we put up Powerhouse Hobbs—which, by the way, that’s how you explain the name change on a Titantron—I was like, oh man. But I’m looking at it, it’s like, you know, everybody’s going to think and be really excited when they see Powerhouse Hobbs. Then we’re literally going to shatter the Titantron and bring up the new Dolph Ziggler, Royce Keys.

Poor guy, man. He—if you’re going to debut, debut on RAW, feed him some locals, get the moves down. But even then, in the match setting and everything, it just felt like he didn’t feel in place in the Rumble, if you know what I mean. It didn’t feel like he was making any kind of impact. He did a couple of power moves, but it felt like it just kind of faded really quick. And of course, the fans not even reacting to the debut kind of is a fault. It’s such a false negative on him because we’re pretty excited that he was going to be in WWE, but this is not the way to do it.

Well, it’s not—the Powerhouse name has to do with he can pick guys that big up. I think it’s even more impressive to say I’m a powerhouse. Why they—you know, the vignettes are coming probably six years from now for this guy—but when I look at that, the vignette should have been him deadlifting as much as he can, squatting and showing like—and even if you’re talking about Mark Henry, who I guess is instilling good creations with WWE, that could be something right there as far as passing the torch from the World’s Strongest Man to Powerhouse Hobbs. He more or less—if that’s more accurate—that’s what I’m more worried about. He didn’t stand out at all.

Context and Expectations Around Hobbs’ WWE Transition

The anticipation for Powerhouse Hobbs’ WWE debut was high due to his reputation in AEW as a dominant force. Fans and insiders expected a strong introduction, possibly on WWE RAW, with a storyline building up his moves and presence. Instead, his brief appearance at the Royal Rumble seemed rushed, lacking the impact necessary to establish his character firmly within WWE’s competitive roster.

Impact of the Debut on Hobbs’ WWE Future

Powerhouse Hobbs’ lackluster debut raises questions about how WWE plans to utilize him going forward. Wrestling experts suggest that the promotional material and storyline development needed to better highlight his power and skills were insufficient. Without a solid start, Hobbs risks being overlooked among WWE’s established performers, which could delay or diminish his rise within the company.

Broader Implications for WWE’s Talent Integration

The handling of Hobbs’ debut also reflects ongoing challenges WWE faces in effectively incorporating talent from rival promotions like AEW. Careful planning and execution are essential to maximize new signings’ potential, but Hobbs’ entrance illustrates how missed opportunities can dampen fan enthusiasm and stunt a promising wrestler’s momentum early in their WWE career.
