WWE SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis announced that Sami Zayn, the current United States Champion, will continue defending his title on the next episode of SmackDown. Known as the Underdog from the Underground, Zayn captured the championship on August 29 by defeating MFT leader Solo Sikoa.
Following his recent victory, Zayn initiated the United States Championship Open Challenge, selecting John Cena as his first opponent. Their match, however, ended in a no-contest when Brock Lesnar abruptly entered the ring and attacked both competitors. Despite this attack, Aldis confirmed in a recent video that Zayn’s open challenge will carry on during the September 12 episode, keeping the spotlight on the championship scene amid ongoing tension.
Vince Russo Shares His Critical View on Sami Zayn’s Championship Role
Veteran wrestling writer Vince Russo expressed his thoughts on Zayn’s current United States Championship reign during an appearance on The Coach and Bro Show by Behind The Turnbuckle Studios. Russo said Zayn’s title win was foreseeable but voiced skepticism about Zayn being positioned as a future World Heavyweight Champion.
“First of all, I saw it [Sami Zayn becoming the United States Champion] a mile away. Second, they’re grooming him to put the big title on him; that’s what they’re going to do, and there is no casual fan on this planet that is ever going to get along with that company if Sami Zayn is your World Heavyweight Champion, not one casual fan on this planet,” Russo said.
Before moving to the SmackDown brand, Zayn had aimed for the World Heavyweight Championship on Raw. However, his surprising appearance as a mystery opponent in Quebec, Canada, led to his United States Championship win, shifting his focus toward the blue brand and its title. Russo’s remarks highlight the mixed reception surrounding Zayn’s role and potential within WWE’s hierarchy.
Challenges Ahead for Sami Zayn as Champion on SmackDown
Sami Zayn’s path as United States Champion now involves defending against an array of challengers, including the heel faction Mental Health Task Force (MFT), which continues to pose a threat. His victory over Solo Sikoa, despite interference from the faction, marked a key turning point, but it remains uncertain how long Zayn can maintain control of the title amid escalating rivalries.
With Brock Lesnar’s unexpected interference and John Cena’s involvement, the championship landscape is increasingly unpredictable. Fans will be watching closely to see whether Zayn can retain his championship amid these challenges and what direction WWE will take with The Great Liberator in the coming weeks.
