Stone Cold Steve Austin declined significant WWE proposals to face a legendary wrestler before his retirement, turning down a highly anticipated bout that fans hoped to see. The Texas Rattlesnake, known for competing against top WWE stars, passed on a potential match with Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan due to concerns about Hogan’s condition.
Why a Stone Cold vs. Hulk Hogan Match Never Happened
One of the most sought-after dream matches in WWE history was for Austin to meet Hulk Hogan in the ring, representing two of the biggest wrestling icons from different eras. Despite the allure of such a showdown, these plans remained unrealized. Instead, the WWE audience witnessed Hogan wrestle The Rock, not just once but twice—first at WrestleMania X-8 and later at No Way Out.
During a recent episode of Grilling JR, veteran commentator Jim Ross explained that Stone Cold Steve Austin’s refusal stemmed from doubts about Hogan’s physical ability in the ring at that point. Ross conveyed that Austin did not feel confident about the chemistry they would have, explaining the decision from Austin’s perspective.
“Austin didn’t want to work with it. It was the wrong place at the wrong time. You know, again, and I’m not trying to make excuses for Hogan, but in all truth be known, he should not even have been in a ring. I saw on the the A&E stuff where Hogan said he had like 10 back surgeries or something, Steve just didn’t have a good gut feeling that they would have passable chemistry, and just to be passable wasn’t good enough for Austin,” he said.
Jim Ross added that Austin’s aggressive style in the ring was not something Hogan could easily match in 2003, citing Austin’s intensity compared to Hogan’s diminished in-ring capabilities.

“He (Austin) was kind of a middle linebacker in a squared circle, and he liked to hit people, and he liked to be aggressive. No one thought that Hogan could maintain that on that given calendar year,” he added.
Instead, Austin faced The Great One (The Rock) at WrestleMania 19 in 2003, which marked his last WWE match before an extended break until his return at WrestleMania 38.
Stone Cold Steve Austin’s Recent WWE Appearances and Future Prospects
While there had been strong rumors about Austin returning to perform at WrestleMania 40, the timing of that event did not work in his favor. Nevertheless, speculation has persisted regarding the possibility of The Texas Rattlesnake making an in-ring comeback at upcoming WWE events.
Recently, WWE and Fanatics confirmed that Austin will appear at WWE World during the WrestleMania 42 weekend, where he will interact with fans through autograph signings and photo sessions. This event indicates Austin remains engaged with the WWE community, even if a full wrestling return has yet to be scheduled.
The rejection of a Hulk Hogan match by Stone Cold Steve Austin highlights the challenges of blending wrestling legends from different periods, especially when physical readiness is uncertain. This decision reflects Austin’s commitment to maintaining a high standard for his matches, emphasizing quality over nostalgia. Fans will likely continue to watch closely for any announcements about future appearances or matches involving Austin at WWE’s premier events.
