Tony D’Angelo’s WWE NXT Absence Explained: Not Injury

Published:

The mystery surrounding Tony D’Angelo’s recent disappearance from WWE NXT television has been clarified, revealing that his absence is not related to injury. According to Dave Meltzer’s latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the wrestler, known as “The Don of NXT,” personally requested time off from WWE NXT, which accounts for his unexpected break from programming.

“Regarding the disappearance of Tony D’Angelo, it is not injury related but he asked for time off,”

Meltzer reported.

Rise and Role of Tony D’Angelo in WWE NXT

Tony D’Angelo emerged as a significant figure in WWE NXT following his debut in late 2021. Quickly establishing himself, he created the mafia-themed faction called The D’Angelo Family. This group, featuring members like Channing Stacks Lorenzo and Luca Crusifino, became a dominant force in the brand, securing multiple championships. D’Angelo himself claimed several titles, including the NXT North American Championship, the NXT Heritage Cup, and two NXT Tag Team Championships during his tenure.

The Dissolution of The D’Angelo Family and Last Appearances

The faction dissolved earlier this year, culminating in a Triple Threat match on the July 15 episode of NXT, where D’Angelo overcame his former allies, Stacks and Crusifino. His last appearance aired on July 29 in a mysterious segment, sparking widespread fan speculation. In that scene, D’Angelo was depicted sitting alone at a dimly lit table until approached by an unknown figure, following which the screen faded to black. This sequence drew comparisons to the memorable ending of The Sopranos and led viewers to wonder if his character had been “whacked” in the storyline.

NXT’s Current Focus and Prospects for D’Angelo’s Return

While Tony D’Angelo remains off television, WWE NXT is concentrating on a cross-promotional storyline with TNA Wrestling, which is set to climax at the NXT vs. TNA Showdown event on October 7. The NXT North American Championship, a title formerly held by D’Angelo, is currently defended by Ethan Page, who will face Mustafa Ali at the upcoming event.

Although there is no official word on when Tony D’Angelo will return, his fan base eagerly awaits the comeback of “The Don,” considering his significant impact on the brand and the unresolved elements of his character’s story.
