Tony Khan Dismisses AEW Storytelling Misconception, Calls Criticism a “Falsehood” Fans Should Reconsider

Published:

Tony Khan has publicly challenged a widespread belief regarding AEW’s storytelling, asserting that the idea AEW lacks narrative depth is incorrect. Since AEW’s inception in 2019, the company has focused heavily on in-ring action, setting itself apart from WWE’s model, which emphasizes promos and backstage segments. However, this has sparked a common criticism that AEW’s matches happen without meaningful storytelling, an accusation Khan strongly disputes.

Emphasizing Storytelling in AEW’s Matches and Characters

During an interview on The Superstar Crossover podcast, Khan addressed what he sees as the biggest misconception about AEW, pinpointing the belief that the program lacks cohesive stories despite high-caliber wrestling. Khan described this notion as a “falsehood” and highlighted longstanding narratives, such as the progression leading to Hangman Adam Page’s World Championship victory over Jon Moxley at All In.

“I think the stories in AEW have been as strong as ever. The wrestling people will say AEW is great.I think a lot of people would concede the action and wrestling- The athletic action is absolutely fantastic. Everyone agrees. And also, if you haven’t seen the show lately or if you’re just listening to a false narrative and you can tell me honestly whether you agree with this or not, Josh. I think the stories in AEW have been fantastic this year, and we’ve been talking a long time about some of the great stories in AEW.And you even just said how fantastic you thought some of the storytelling around Jon Moxley’s World Championship reign has been. People even question that aspect of it and I think that was proven right. But then certainly whether you love them or not, nobody can question, there’s a lot of storytelling in AEW.I think it’s fantastic, and a lot of the fans who actually pay attention to it think it’s great. But there will be people…Tell me if you agree with this or not. There’s people that would say that there’s a lack, and I don’t agree with this, I think it’s untrue, of stories in AEW. I don’t think that’s true at all, and it’s really, I think, not only a misconception, but a falsehood that people spread.”

Khan’s comments reinforce that the narrative arcs, especially surrounding major stars like Moxley and Page, contribute significantly to AEW’s programming, countering the idea that wrestling bouts occur randomly or merely as filler content.

In a separate storyline, Kyle Fletcher, the TNT Champion, is set to discover his opponent for the Forbidden Door event in London after issuing a challenge to a top NJPW talent. Fletcher’s recent new contract also marks a significant investment in his future within AEW.

Tony Khan’s Plans for Themed Episodes and Future Events

Tony Khan has disclosed intentions to produce a special golf-themed Dynamite episode titled Fairway To Heaven, introducing unique thematic elements to the weekly shows. These creative directions are part of Khan’s broader efforts to maintain viewer engagement and innovate the AEW experience beyond traditional wrestling formats.

Significance of Addressing AEW’s Storytelling Perceptions

Khan’s rebuttal to the “lack of storytelling” critique sheds light on the challenges AEW faces as it carves out a distinct identity in the crowded wrestling industry. By affirming that AEW’s narratives are both substantial and appreciated by attentive fans, Khan aims to shift the conversation from surface-level criticisms to a deeper understanding of the product.

As AEW continues to expand and deliver high-profile events like Forbidden Door and dynamic weekly shows, the company’s storytelling approach will likely remain a topic of debate. Nevertheless, Khan’s remarks may encourage fans and critics alike to reexamine their perceptions and acknowledge the layered narratives driving AEW’s ongoing momentum.
