Tony Khan has expressed strong interest in launching a women’s Continental Classic tournament for AEW, following the success of the men’s version. The men’s Continental Classic, which debuted in 2023, has quickly become a key event in AEW’s annual schedule. Although the women’s tournament is not slated to start immediately, Khan envisions it as a promising addition once conditions improve and the women’s roster is fully healthy.
Khan Discusses Timing and Challenges for Women’s Tournament
In a recent interview with New Orleans radio station Q93, Khan addressed questions about the creation of a women’s Continental Championship. He pointed out that AEW currently features the Women’s World title and the TBS Championship, but acknowledged that adding a Continental title for women could be an exciting development.
“We’ve got the Women’s World title and the TBS title. I think the Continental would certainly be something very, very interesting,”
Khan said regarding the prospect. He also mentioned setbacks that affected the women’s division earlier in the year at the All In pay-per-view event in Texas, which slowed progress toward expanding the tournament concept.
Health of the Women’s Division Critical for Success
“I think it would be a great thing if we get the division healthy where we’ve got all of our top fighters ready to go. That could be a really great thing. You know, that’s a very intense tournament with matches every week. It’s hard-hitting. Last year we actually had an injury on the men’s side. One injury when you have a tournament like that can change everything. So I am very open to it, especially if we can get all the top wrestlers healthy to compete.”
Khan emphasized the importance of having a full, fit roster before committing to the women’s Continental Classic, noting the demanding nature of weekly tournament matches and how injuries can alter outcomes drastically.
Background on AEW’s Continental Classic and Related Titles
The men’s Continental Classic has had standout winners like Eddie Kingston and Kazuchika Okada. Although Okada unified the Continental Championship with the International Championship, the titles maintain distinct lineages within AEW’s championship landscape. Khan also mentioned plans for women’s tag team titles, which will materialize once the division is in a strong position to showcase its best talent.
Outlook for the AEW Women’s Division in 2025
Despite some injury challenges, Khan remains optimistic about the AEW women’s division, citing 2025 as its best year yet. His openness to expanding the tournament format and introducing new titles signals AEW’s commitment to cultivating a robust and competitive women’s wrestling scene in the near future.
