Trick Williams Joins SmackDown, Targets WWE Championship

Published:

Trick Williams joins SmackDown as a full-time member, kicking off the new year with the clear intent to contend for the WWE Championship. The two-time NXT Champion made his presence felt immediately, declaring the blue brand his new home with championship gold at the forefront of his goals.

A Decisive Debut During Sami Zayn’s Promo

After spending 2025 making appearances across both WWE brands and briefly acting as a free agent, Williams opted for commitment, debuting as a dedicated SmackDown member just a week later. His arrival came during an in-ring segment where Sami Zayn was outlining his own ambition for the WWE Championship. Williams interrupted Zayn, indicating he was not looking for a slow acclimation, but rather intending to compete at the highest level right away.

Zayn addressed Williams’ credentials and determination, but did not shy away from issuing a word of caution to the newcomer.

“You have yet to be humbled.”

This pointed exchange established Williams as a driven and confident competitor, ready to challenge established stars and stake his claim in the main event scene.

First Challenge Set for Next Week’s Show

Backstage, Trick Williams confronted SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis, interrupting a discussion between Aldis and Rey Fenix. A heated exchange soon erupted between Williams and Fenix, resulting in Aldis stepping in to announce a match between the two. Williams will thus compete in his inaugural SmackDown bout next week, providing an early test of his readiness and intention to make an impact among WWE’s top talent.

Building Credentials Before SmackDown

Prior to his SmackDown debut, Williams transitioned from pursuing a professional NFL career to training as a pro wrestler in 2018 with Combat Zone Wrestling. Signing with WWE’s developmental program in 2021, he made waves alongside Carmelo Hayes, forming a standout partnership in NXT. Their subsequent split and rivalry allowed Williams to emerge as a singles competitor, capturing the NXT Championship twice and also securing the NXT North American Championship.

Beyond WWE, Trick Williams expanded his career in 2025 by winning the TNA World Championship, ultimately dropping the title to Mike Santana at Bound for Glory in October.

Looking Ahead: Williams’ Place Among WWE’s Elite

With Williams now officially in the SmackDown ranks, he prepares to face Rey Fenix in his first match, aiming to convert his early momentum into opportunities at the championship level. As he joins an accomplished roster that includes established names like Sami Zayn and Rey Fenix, Trick Williams’ ambition for the WWE Championship places him immediately in the spotlight. The intensely competitive environment on SmackDown means every appearance and victory will be crucial as he seeks to solidify his legacy within WWE.
