Trick Williams Reveals WWE Rise and Steve Spurrier Challenge

Trick Williams, now a rapidly emerging star in WWE, once pursued a career in college football under legendary coach Steve Spurrier at the University of South Carolina. Reflecting on his path from aspiring athlete to WWE performer, Williams shared insights during a recent appearance on the Paul Finebaum Show.

When asked if it was more challenging to face the elite competitors in WWE or to meet Spurrier’s high expectations, Williams admitted the difficulty in choosing between the two.

Staying on the good side of Steve Spurrier is a difficult task if you’re not winning all the ball games. I’d say they probably equally as difficult.

Experience Under Steve Spurrier’s Leadership

Williams played as a wide receiver for the South Carolina Gamecocks during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, coinciding with the final years of Spurrier’s coaching tenure. Spurrier retired midway through the 2015 season after the team started 2-4, marking a stark contrast to the program’s earlier success. Prior to Williams joining, the Gamecocks had enjoyed three consecutive strong seasons with an 11-2 record each year from 2011 to 2013, including a celebrated Orange Bowl victory the year before he arrived.

Man, what (Spurrier) was doing at the University of South Carolina, my hometown was undeniable,

Williams told Finebaum.

Now, at this point, we’re No. 9 in the nation.

Choosing South Carolina and Early Football Career

Williams explained his decision to walk on to the South Carolina football team, motivated by his hometown connection and desire to compete at the highest level. His first game came against Texas A&M, led by quarterback Kenny Hill, though the Gamecocks did not win that match. Despite limited playing time—11 catches for 121 yards all recorded in 2015—he persevered and earned a degree in physical education.

As a matter of fact, I decided to walk on to the University of South Carolina. The first game of the season was against Texas A&M when they had Kenny Hill. … We didn’t win that game, but I knew I wanted to play football the highest level. South Carolina was my hometown, so I decided to walk on, take that leap of faith and see what I had.

Significance of Williams’ Journey and Future Outlook

Trick Williams’ story highlights the unpredictable nature of athletic careers, demonstrating resilience in shifting from collegiate football to professional wrestling. His experience under Spurrier’s intense coaching regime prepared him for the competitive demands he now faces in WWE.
