WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia Threatens Indie Wrestling Scene

Published:

WWE WrestleMania 43 is set to take place in Saudi Arabia, raising concerns about the future of independent wrestling events typically thriving during WrestleMania weekend. This shift to Saudi Arabia may disrupt the usual cluster of wrestling conventions and shows that attract fans and performers each year.

Industry insiders Brandon Thurston and John Pollock from POST Wrestling have gathered insights from organizers who are typically involved in these events around WrestleMania. The move overseas presents challenges that could alter how the indie wrestling scene operates during this signature WWE weekend.

Challenges for Convention Organizers Amid the International Move

Michael Bochicchio, owner of Highspots and operator of WrestleCon, indicated that holding an event of this scale in Saudi Arabia is unlikely at this time due to elevated costs and logistical barriers. He mentioned that such an international endeavor would increase expenses, and he is exploring options to hold an event within a U.S. city during WrestleMania weekend regardless of WWE’s location.

GCW’s Prospects of Hosting Events in or Near Saudi Arabia

Brett Lauderdale, owner of Game Changer Wrestling (GCW), shared that two separate entities in the Middle East have approached him with offers to host GCW events. However, he remains cautious, explaining that such plans may not be feasible this far ahead. Lauderdale also noted that any GCW events held in Saudi Arabia would likely face stricter restrictions compared to shows hosted in the United States.

Potential Outcomes and What Lies Ahead for Wrestling Fandom

The relocation of WrestleMania 43 to Saudi Arabia introduces uncertainty for the traditional indie wrestling weekend festivities. Smaller promotions and convention organizers are currently reassessing how to maintain their presence during this timeframe, possibly shifting events back to U.S. cities. Fans and industry members alike are watching closely to see if alternative events will emerge stateside or if indie wrestling will attempt expansions in the Middle East despite challenges.

“This far out, it’s hard to say if these plans are realistic.” – Brett Lauderdale, GCW Owner
“Running a convention of this size overseas would lead to heightened costs and fees.” – Michael Bochicchio, WrestleCon Operator
