Anthony Bowens Bio
Anthony Bowens (born December 18, 1990) is an American professional wrestler. He is signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he is a former one-time AEW World Tag Team Champion and one-time and longest reigning AEW World Trios Champion as a former member of The Acclaimed. Standing 178 centimeters tall and weighing approximately 93 kilograms, Bowens has built a reputation as a charismatic performer and one of the most visible openly gay wrestlers in major American promotions.
Early Life and Background
Bowens was born in Nutley, New Jersey. He attended Nutley High School before continuing his education at Montclair State University. Before entering the world of professional wrestling, he played baseball for eleven years, including two seasons each at Montclair State University and Seton Hall University, where he competed for the Red Hawks and Pirates respectively.
His athletic background in baseball gave Bowens a strong foundation in teamwork, conditioning, and competitive performance. While training and competing in amateur wrestling, he was noticed by professional wrestler Santino Marella, who asked him whether he had ever considered a career in the ring. The encounter opened the door to a new chapter in his athletic life.
Path to Professional Wrestling
Bowens began training in 2012 and made his professional wrestling debut in 2013. He trained under Pat Buck, refining his craft in the independent scene before taking his first notable national television appearance. On the December 21, 2016 episode of WWE NXT, Bowens teamed with John Ortagun to face The Authors of Pain, Akam and Rezar, in a tag team match.
During that NXT contest, Bowens suffered a concussion when Ortagun was dropped onto his head, forcing him to the sidelines for recovery. Despite the setback, the appearance on WWE’s developmental brand gave him valuable in-ring experience and exposure to a wider audience.
Anthony Bowens Career
Early Career (2013-2019)
After recovering from his concussion, Bowens worked prolifically for tristate and New England independent wrestling promotions, including Combat Zone Wrestling and Beyond Wrestling. He also made appearances for Global Force Wrestling and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, building a reputation as a reliable and versatile performer across multiple promotions.
Between 2016 and 2017, Bowens captured the WrestlePro Heavyweight Championship twice. On January 21, 2017, he challenged Drew Galloway unsuccessfully for the WCPW World Heavyweight Championship at Battle Club Pro’s Fight Forever event, which marked the first time the title had been defended outside of the United Kingdom.
All Elite Wrestling Breakthrough (2020-2022)
In November 2020, All Elite Wrestling President Tony Khan announced that Bowens, alongside Max Caster, had been signed to a five-year contract with the promotion. The announcement also stated that Bowens and Caster would compete as a tag team named The Acclaimed, and the duo initially established themselves as heels in the AEW tag team division.
The team’s trajectory changed as audiences reacted positively to their entrance rap segment, and The Acclaimed transitioned into fan favorites. In May 2022, Bowens underwent knee surgery, sidelining him for several months. He remained active at AEW shows, performing promos while using a wheelchair, while Caster teamed with the Gunns during his absence.
At the 2022 AEW Grand Slam event, The Acclaimed won the AEW World Tag Team Championship. This victory made Bowens the first openly gay wrestler to win a championship in AEW. Bowens, Caster, and their ally Billy Gunn went on to defeat The House of Black to become AEW World Trios Champions, adding a second title to the group’s resume.
2023-2025 Era
At Dynasty: Zero Hour on April 21, 2024, ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions Bullet Club Gold defeated Bowens, Caster, and Billy for the AEW World Trios Championship in a winner takes all championship unification match, ending their reign at a record 238 days. The Acclaimed then began a feud with The Young Bucks, defeating them on the June 19 episode of Dynamite in an eliminator match to earn a future shot at the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
The Acclaimed were also part of Team AEW that defeated The Elite in a Blood and Guts match on July 24 at the namesake event. On August 14, their title match against The Young Bucks ended in a disqualification loss due to interference from FTR, and on August 25 at All In, they again failed to capture the titles in a three-way tag team match also involving FTR.
Tension between The Acclaimed members rose in late 2024 as Caster began acting more arrogant. In January 2025 on the Maximum Carnage special episode of Collision, Bowens chose to side with Billy over Caster, resulting in Caster disbanding The Acclaimed. On April 6 at Dynasty Zero Hour, Bowens defeated Caster in a squash match, and on July 12 at All In, he competed in the men’s Casino Gauntlet match, won by MJF.

Bowens is known for his confident promos, athletic in-ring movement, and strong chemistry as a tag team specialist.
