Early Life and Background
Sesugh Uhaa was born on August 22, 1987, in Sacramento, California, and was raised in Stone Mountain, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. He became a fan of professional wrestling at an early age, citing performers such as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, and Kurt Angle as major influences. Uhaa attended a military high school and began practicing various sports, including amateur wrestling, soccer, football, and track and field, both as an outlet and a way to step away from the structure of military life.
While weight training in high school, his coach gave him the nickname “Uhaa Nation,” saying he was “as strong as a single nation.” This nickname later became his first ring name. Uhaa attended Auburn University but left before completing his degree to pursue professional wrestling. Years later, in 2025, he returned to academics and graduated from Keiser University, balancing education with his ongoing wrestling career.
Path to Professional Wrestling
After leaving college in 2008, Uhaa quickly found work to fund his wrestling training. He began training at age 21 under Mr. Hughes at the World Wrestling Alliance 4 (WWA4) promotion’s training school in Atlanta. He made his wrestling debut on August 17, 2009, under the ring name Uhaa Nation and spent the next two years working the independent circuit in Georgia, with trips to Houston-based Pro Wrestling Alliance and Great Championship Wrestling in Alabama.
His breakthrough came on September 9, 2011, when he attended a tryout seminar held by Dragon Gate USA and was immediately signed. The deal opened doors to Dragon Gate USA, its parent promotion Dragon Gate in Japan, and affiliates Evolve and Full Impact Pro. By the end of 2011, Dragon Gate USA named him Best Newcomer of the Year, and he finished second in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Rookie of the Year voting.
