Chad Gable Bio

Charles Edward Betts, professionally known as Chad Gable, is an American professional wrestler and former amateur wrestler born on March 8, 1986, in Saint Michael, Minnesota. He has been signed to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) since 2013 and performs on the Raw brand, where he has built a reputation as one of the most technically gifted in-ring performers of his generation. A 2012 U.S. Olympian in Greco-Roman wrestling, Gable transitioned from amateur competition to sports entertainment and has won tag team gold across NXT, SmackDown, and Raw.

Standing 173 centimeters tall, Betts has portrayed several ring characters, including Chad Gable, Shorty G, and the masked luchador El Grande Americano. Married to Kristi Oliver since 2011, he is a father of three and a member of the Comanche Nation.

Early Life and Background

Charles Edward Betts was raised in Saint Michael, Minnesota, a small community northwest of the Twin Cities. He attended a Minnesota high school where he became a state champion wrestler in 2004, establishing himself early as one of the top amateur talents in his weight class. He was coached during his developmental years by Dan Chandler and Gregg Greeno, both of whom helped shape his technical foundation.

Betts continued his wrestling career at Northern Michigan University, a program with a strong tradition in the sport. After completing his undergraduate studies, he returned to education in October 2021 to earn a master’s degree from Full Sail University. He is also a member of the Comanche Nation.

Path to Professional Wrestling

After his standout amateur career, Betts represented the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, competing in the Greco-Roman 84 kilogram event. He defeated Keitani Graham of the Federated States of Micronesia in the qualification round before being eliminated by Pablo Shorey of Cuba. Earlier that year he had won the 84 kilogram class at the U.S. Olympic Trials by defeating Jordan Holm two matches to none.

His Olympic credentials drew the attention of WWE, and in November 2013 Betts signed a contract with the promotion. He was assigned to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, and adopted the ring name Chad Gable as a tribute to American wrestling legend Dan Gable. He was sent to NXT, WWE’s developmental brand, to refine his skills before being called up to the main roster.

Chad Gable Career

Early Career (2014-2015)

Chad Gable made his in-ring debut on September 5, 2014, at an NXT house show in Cocoa Beach, Florida, defeating Troy McClain. He had an early match against then-debuting Braun Strowman at an NXT Live event on December 19, 2014, in a losing effort, before appearing on NXT television for the first time on January 8, 2015, in a match against Tyler Breeze.

In May 2015, Gable began a storyline with fellow NXT wrestler Jason Jordan, attempting to convince him to form a tag team. The duo officially debuted together on July 15, 2015, defeating Elias Samson and Steve Cutler, and later adopted the team name American Alpha.

American Alpha Era (2015-2017)

American Alpha won the NXT Tag Team Championship from The Revival at NXT TakeOver: Dallas in April 2016, a defining moment for both men. They held the titles for 68 days before losing them back to The Revival at NXT TakeOver: The End. Following the 2016 WWE Draft, the team was selected as the first overall pick for the SmackDown brand.

On December 27, 2016, American Alpha won a four corners elimination match on SmackDown Live to capture the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. They dropped the titles to The Usos on March 21, 2017, after a 84-day reign. The team was effectively disbanded in July 2017 when Jason Jordan was moved to the Raw brand.

Tag Team with Shelton Benjamin (2017-2018)

On August 22, 2017, SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan announced the signing of Shelton Benjamin to team with Gable. The duo defeated The Ascension the following week in Benjamin’s first WWE match since 2010. They challenged The Usos for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship on several occasions and slowly turned heel during their pursuit of the titles.

The team was disbanded on April 16, 2018, when Gable was moved to Raw as part of the 2018 WWE Superstar Shake-up.

Tag Team with Bobby Roode (2018-2019)

On September 3, 2018, Gable formed a tag team with Bobby Roode on Raw, and the two quickly captured the Raw Tag Team Championship on December 10, 2018, defeating Authors of Pain and Drake Maverick in a three-on-two handicap match. With the victory, Gable became the second man, after former partner Jason Jordan, to have won the NXT, SmackDown, and Raw Tag Team Championships.

The duo lost the titles to The Revival on February 11, 2019. The team ended during the 2019 WWE Superstar Shake-up, when Gable was drafted to SmackDown and Roode remained on Raw.

Shorty G Era (2019-2020)

After losing to Baron Corbin in the finals of the 2019 King of the Ring tournament, Gable defeated Corbin at Hell in a Cell on October 6, 2019, and was announced as Shorty Gable, a name that was later shortened to Shorty G. He wrestled under this character throughout late 2019 and into 2020, including a loss to Sheamus at the Royal Rumble.

In 2024, Gable described the Shorty G character as the lowest point of his career. On October 23, 2020, after a loss to Lars Sullivan, he announced he was retiring the Shorty G name and reverting to Chad Gable.

Alpha Academy Era (2020-2024)

Gable opened the Alpha Academy on the November 13, 2020, episode of SmackDown and recruited Otis as his client. In January 2022, Alpha Academy defeated RK-Bro on Raw to win the Raw Tag Team Championship, holding the titles for 55 days before dropping them back to RK-Bro on March 7. Maxxine Dupri later joined the group, expanding the Academy’s membership.

On August 7, 2023, Gable won a fatal four-way match on Raw to earn an Intercontinental Championship opportunity against Gunther. He won a subsequent title match by countout, ending Gunther’s undefeated singles streak on the main roster, though the title did not change hands due to the countout stipulation. Following WrestleMania XL, where he helped train Sami Zayn to defeat Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship, Gable turned on Zayn and shifted his focus toward winning the title himself, a pursuit that ultimately ended without gold.

American Made and El Grande Americano (2024-2025)

Following a falling out with Alpha Academy, Gable aligned himself with The Creed Brothers as American Made in mid-2024. The faction feuded with The Wyatt Sicks before being defeated in a Street Fight on September 9, 2024. In January 2025, Gable suffered a loss to Penta on Raw that sparked a comedic storyline in which he embarked on a quest to master lucha libre.

In March 2025, Gable began portraying the masked luchador El Grande Americano. On April 19 at Night 1 of WrestleMania 41, El Grande Americano defeated Rey Fénix. On May 7, he defeated Dragon Lee to win the WWE Speed Championship, his first singles title. In June 2025, Gable suffered a legitimate shoulder injury, and Ludwig Kaiser took over the role of El Grande Americano on June 30, 2025.

Style and Strengths

Chad Gable is widely regarded as one of the most technically proficient wrestlers in modern WWE, drawing directly on his amateur background for an authentic grappling-heavy style. His repertoire includes suplexes, ankle locks, and chain wrestling sequences that mirror real Olympic competition. He excels in tag team environments, where his precise timing and ability to sell for a partner have produced long, dramatic matches.

Notable Events and Milestones

Among Gable’s signature accomplishments are his 2012 Olympic appearance, his NXT Tag Team Championship win at TakeOver: Dallas, his triple crown of tag team titles across all three WWE brands, and his 2025 WWE Speed Championship victory as El Grande Americano. His countout win over Gunther in 2023 remains one of the most celebrated matches of his career.

2025 Season Performance

The 2025 calendar year has been one of reinvention for Chad Gable. After spending several months at the center of a comedic lucha libre storyline, he debuted the masked character El Grande Americano in March and quickly found success, defeating Rey Fénix at WrestleMania 41 and capturing the WWE Speed Championship from Dragon Lee on May 7.

His momentum was halted in June when he suffered a legitimate shoulder injury that forced him out of action. The role of El Grande Americano was officially taken over by Ludwig Kaiser on June 30, 2025. Gable also challenged El Hijo del Vikingo for the AAA Mega Championship at Worlds Collide on June 7 in a losing effort.

Looking ahead, Gable’s focus is expected to remain on recovery and a potential return to singles competition once healthy. His pursuit of additional championships, particularly the Intercontinental and United States titles, remains a central storyline when he returns to WWE television.
