Phillip Jack Brooks, known worldwide by his ring name CM Punk, is an American professional wrestler and actor. As of November 2023, he is signed to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), performing on the Raw brand and holding the World Heavyweight Championship in his record-tying second reign. Regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, he is known for his outspoken straight edge persona, which mirrors his real-life lifestyle. His 434-day reign as WWE Champion remains the tenth-longest world title reign in company history.
Across more than two decades in the industry, Brooks has performed for major organizations including Ring of Honor (ROH), NWA: Total Nonstop Action, WWE, and All Elite Wrestling (AEW), winning top championships in each. Outside the ring, he competed in mixed martial arts under the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) banner and has appeared in horror films and the wrestling drama series Heels.
Early Life and Background
Phillip Jack Brooks was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 26, 1978. He is the youngest son of housewife Harriet Jadwiga and electrician Daniel Brooks. His mother was born in Germany to Polish parents, while his father had Irish ancestry. Brooks and his estranged older brother, Michal, were raised in Lockport, Illinois, in a household shaped by his father’s struggle with alcoholism.
Because of his father’s drinking, Brooks adopted a straight edge lifestyle as a teenager. He later credited professional wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper as the inspiration for pursuing a career in the ring. Before stepping into professional wrestling, his first job was at a comic book shop called All American Comics in Evergreen Park, Illinois, a store that ultimately closed in January 2022. He was arrested multiple times while attending Lockport Township High School.
Path to Professional Wrestling
Brooks began training as a backyard wrestler in the mid-1990s, debuting for the Lunatic Wrestling Federation on October 25, 1997, the day before his nineteenth birthday. He later trained at the Steel Domain and Primetime Wrestling promotions before being hired as the first head trainer of the Ring of Honor wrestling school in late 2003.
His early matches with Colt Cabana earned him a spot on the ROH roster, and he made his official ROH in-ring debut at All Star Extravaganza on November 9, 2002. Brooks also made appearances for NWA: Total Nonstop Action in 2002, qualifying for the Gauntlet for the Gold tag team match on his first night. After a falling out with TNA officials in early 2004, he departed the promotion and focused his career on ROH.
CM Punk Career
Early Career (1997-2005)
Brooks spent his earliest years traveling the independent circuit, working promotions such as IWA Mid-South while refining his straight edge persona. He captured the IWA Mid-South Heavyweight Championship five times during this developmental stretch, establishing himself as a dependable main-event performer outside of WWE.
At ROH, he captured the ROH Tag Team Championship with Cabana and engaged in a celebrated three-match series against Samoa Joe for the ROH World Championship in 2004. The second encounter received a five-star rating from Wrestling Observer Newsletter journalist Dave Meltzer, the first North American match to earn that distinction in seven years. Brooks capped his independent run by defeating Austin Aries for the ROH World Championship in June 2005 before signing with WWE.
Ring of Honor Breakthrough (2002-2006)
Brooks quickly became a central figure in ROH, capturing the ROH World Championship in June 2005 and headlining the promotion’s famous Summer of Punk storyline, in which he threatened to take the title to WWE. He defended the championship throughout the summer and was named Superstar of the Year at the Slammy Awards later that decade.
He was inducted into the ROH Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural 2022 class, cementing his legacy with the promotion where he first rose to national prominence. During his initial ROH tenure, Brooks also held the ROH Tag Team Championship twice alongside Cabana.
WWE First Run (2005-2014)
Brooks signed with WWE in 2005 and was assigned to the ECW brand, where he won the ECW Championship. He transitioned to the main roster and became one of the company’s most talked-about performers, winning the Money in the Bank ladder match in 2008 and 2009 as the only back-to-back winner of the contest. He cashed in the second briefcase to defeat Jeff Hardy for the WWE Championship in 2009.
His 434-day reign as WWE Champion began in November 2011 and ended in January 2013, ranking as the tenth-longest world title reign in WWE history. During this run, he was voted Pro Wrestling Illustrated Wrestler of the Year in 2011 and 2012. After a much-publicized falling out with management, Brooks left WWE in 2014 and stepped away from active wrestling for several years.
All Elite Wrestling Run (2021-2023)
Brooks returned to the ring for All Elite Wrestling on August 20, 2021, drawing one of the loudest crowd reactions in U.S. wrestling history at The First Dance event in Chicago. He defeated Adam Page at Double or Nothing in May 2022 to win the AEW World Championship and won the title a second time at All Out in September 2022.
Following backstage controversy after All Out, he was suspended and later vacated the championship. After a nine-month absence, he returned on the premiere episode of Collision in June 2023. He was terminated from AEW on September 2, 2023, after a backstage altercation with Jack Perry at All In: London.
WWE Return Era (2023-Present)
Brooks made a surprise return to WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames on November 25, 2023, in the Chicago metropolitan area, his first WWE appearance since 2014. He signed with the Raw brand shortly after and entered the 2024 Royal Rumble, where he tore his right triceps and was forced out of a planned match against Seth Rollins at WrestleMania XL.
He engaged in a critically acclaimed trilogy with Drew McIntyre, culminating in a Hell in a Cell match at Bad Blood in 2024. He later won the World Heavyweight Championship on the debut episode of Raw on Netflix in January 2025. At SummerSlam in August 2025, his five-minute reign ended when Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase, marking the shortest reign in that title’s history. Brooks regained the vacant title at Saturday Night’s Main Event on November 1, 2025.
