Drew McIntyre Bio
Andrew McLean Galloway IV, known worldwide as Drew McIntyre, is a Scottish-American professional wrestler born on 6 June 1985 in Ayr, Scotland. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches tall, he has become one of the most recognizable figures in modern professional wrestling, signed to WWE, where he performs on the SmackDown brand. He made history as the first Scottish world heavyweight champion in WWE history.
McIntyre began his career in 2001 at the age of 15, training under Mark Sloan with the Frontier Wrestling Alliance in Portsmouth, England. Over more than two decades, he has competed across Scotland, Ireland, Japan, and the United States, capturing championships in WWE, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, Insane Championship Wrestling, and Evolve. His autobiography, A Chosen Destiny: My Story, was released on 4 May 2021.
Early Life and Background
Andrew McLean Galloway IV was born in Ayr on 6 June 1985 and grew up in the nearby town of Prestwick, where he attended Prestwick Academy. As a child, he played youth football for Prestwick Boys, typically in defensive positions, and once considered pursuing professional football as a career. A childhood fan of professional wrestling, he began training at the age of 15, with his parents agreeing to support his wrestling ambitions as long as he maintained equal focus on his education.
He followed through on that promise, earning a master’s degree in criminology from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2006, after also briefly attending Birmingham University during an exchange year. His early exposure to wrestling came through local British promotions, and his family later moved to England, where he enrolled in the Frontier Wrestling Alliance’s Academy. Galloway also developed wide-ranging interests as a young person, including a memorable childhood letter to the FBI through the Freedom of Information Act after reading a conspiracy-focused magazine.
Path to Professional Wrestling
McIntyre’s path to professional wrestling started with formal training at the Frontier Wrestling Alliance’s Academy under Mark Sloan, alongside Justin Richards and James Tighe. Established wrestlers such as Doug Williams, Paul Burchill, and Alex Shane also helped with his development. In 2003, he made his debut for the inaugural show of British Championship Wrestling in the Greater Glasgow area, training under Colin McKay and Spinner McKenzie, and developing a cocky persona called “Thee” Drew Galloway.
His first match ended in a loss to Stu Natt, but he earned his first win the following night in a tag team match with Wolfgang. Under the management of Charles Boddington, Galloway worked his way through Scottish and Irish independent promotions, including Irish Whip Wrestling, where he captured the IWW International Heavyweight Championship. By 2007, his reputation had grown enough that WWE offered him a developmental contract, sending him to Ohio Valley Wrestling and Florida Championship Wrestling before bringing him to the main roster as “The Chosen One.”

He held the BCW Heavyweight Championship through 2007 with successful defenses against wrestlers like Martin Stone, Allan Grogan, and Lionheart, before vacating the title when he relocated to the United States to sign with WWE. His growth on the independent scene gave him the polish and reputation needed to make an impression on WWE’s developmental system.
