Before committing to professional wrestling, Devitt played both association football and Gaelic football during his school years.
He attended St. Cronan’s School in Bray, where he developed an enthusiasm for televised wrestling. He frequently watched World of Sport and WWF programming, citing The British Bulldogs, Shawn Michaels, Mr. Perfect, Rick Rude, Savio Vega, and Koko B. Ware as formative influences on his future in-ring approach.
Path to Professional Wrestling
Devitt launched his professional wrestling career in 2001, working the independent circuit across the United Kingdom and Ireland. He quickly established himself by capturing championships in promotions such as ICW and Revolution Pro Wrestling, where he won the British Cruiserweight title and a pair of NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championships. These early accolades positioned him as one of Europe’s most promising junior heavyweights.
In March 2006, Devitt signed with NJPW and adopted the ring name Prince Devitt, a moniker created by Simon Inoki because Japanese audiences struggled to pronounce his real name. He debuted in April 2006 against El Samurai and soon aligned with the Control Terrorism Unit stable, forming key tag partnerships with Minoru and later Ryusuke Taguchi as half of the team Apollo 55.
His ascent within NJPW accelerated when he won the Best of the Super Juniors tournament in 2010 and 2013 and captured the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship on three occasions. Through NJPW’s working relationship with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, he also won the NWA World Historic Middleweight Championship. In 2013, he founded the Bullet Club stable, forever changing the landscape of professional wrestling.
