Joshua Samuel Fatu was born in San Francisco, California, on August 22, 1985, nine minutes after his twin brother Jonathan. He is of Samoan descent and is a member of the Anoaʻi family, which has a rich history in professional wrestling. Jey was raised in a family deeply rooted in the wrestling industry, as his father is the WWE Hall of Famer Solofa Fatu Jr., known as Rikishi. He attended Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida, where he played competitive football alongside his brother. Jey continued his football career at the University of West Alabama from 2003 to 2005, where he played linebacker. Realizing that his football aspirations were not progressing as hoped, Jey and his brother decided to follow in their father’s footsteps and pursue careers in wrestling.

Jey Uso began his wrestling career in 2007, making his debut for World Xtreme Wrestling (WXW) alongside his brother Jonathan Fatu as a tag team called The Fatu Twins.
