John Anthony Nicholas “Johnny” Gargano, born on August 14, 1987, is an American professional wrestler. He is signed to WWE, where he performs on the SmackDown brand and is one-half of the tag team #DIY alongside Tommaso Ciampa. Gargano is widely known for his celebrated run in NXT, where he became the first-ever NXT Triple Crown winner by capturing the NXT Championship once, the NXT North American Championship a record three times, and the NXT Tag Team Championship once. His connection with the NXT audience earned him the nickname “The Heart and Soul of NXT.”

John Anthony Nicholas Gargano was born and raised in Lakewood, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb. His mother, Adrienne (née Klasinski), is of Polish descent, while his father, Francis Gargano, is of Italian descent and worked as a restaurateur. Wrestling came into his life early, at the age of eight, when Cleveland All-Pro Wrestling (CAPW) owner J.T. Lightning, who ran shows behind his father’s catering business, allowed him to roll around in the ring.

Gargano made his professional wrestling debut for CAPW in 2005, with his first recorded match taking place at the AIW Gauntlet For The Gold Battle Royal on December 11, 2005. In 2006, he won his first singles title by defeating Josh Prohibition, M-Dogg 20, and Zach Gowen in a four-way match to capture the CAPW Junior Heavyweight Championship.
