These years laid the foundation for his transition to WWE’s developmental system.
NXT Breakthrough (2020–2021)
Kesar signed with WWE in February 2020 and debuted in NXT under the new ring name Karrion Kross in May 2020. He quickly built an undefeated streak, defeating Leon Ruff in a squash match before submitting Tommaso Ciampa at NXT TakeOver: In Your House. At NXT TakeOver: XXX on August 22, 2020, he defeated Keith Lee to win the NXT Championship, but a separated shoulder forced him to vacate the title just four days later, the shortest reign in the title’s history.
Kross returned to NXT in late 2020 and won the NXT Championship for a second time at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver in April 2021, defeating Finn Bálor. He successfully defended the title against Bálor, in a fatal five-way match, and against Johnny Gargano with Samoa Joe as guest referee. On August 22, 2021, at NXT TakeOver 36, he lost the championship to Samoa Joe, ending his undefeated NXT run.
WWE Main Roster and Return (2021–2025)
Kross made his main roster debut on the July 19, 2021, episode of Raw, where he was defeated by Jeff Hardy in less than two minutes. His character was reworked with a gladiator helmet and suspenders, a change widely criticized by fans and analysts. He was released from WWE in November 2021 along with Scarlett Bordeaux.
After brief appearances in MLW and NJPW in 2022, Kross returned to WWE on the August 5, 2022, episode of SmackDown, attacking Drew McIntyre. He defeated McIntyre in a strap match at Extreme Rules and later formed the Final Testament stable with Scarlett, the Authors of Pain, and Paul Ellering. The stable feuded with Bobby Lashley and the Street Profits before being moved to Raw in the 2024 WWE Draft. After the Authors of Pain were released in February 2025, Kross adopted a new persona known as The Devil’s Advocate, appearing at WrestleMania 41 and drawing strong fan reactions at Night of Champions and SummerSlam. He departed WWE again on August 10, 2025, when his contract expired.
