Aoife Marie Cusack (born 23 October 1996) is an Irish professional wrestler currently signed to WWE, where she performs on the Raw brand under the ring name Lyra Valkyria. She is recognized as the inaugural Women’s Intercontinental Champion, a one-time NXT Women’s Champion, and a one-time WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion. Standing 160 cm tall and competing at around 59 kg, Valkyria has earned a reputation for her technical skill and poise inside the squared circle. Her journey from Dublin’s independent circuit to WWE’s main roster marks her as one of Ireland’s most successful modern wrestling exports.
Early Life and Background
Aoife Marie Cusack was born on 23 October 1996 in Dublin, Ireland. She grew up in Ireland, where she developed an interest in performance and storytelling that would later shape her wrestling career. Cusack attended Dublin City University, where she studied journalism, an academic background that complemented her future role as a character-driven performer on screen.
In 2014, Cusack began training for a professional wrestling career at a school in Bray, before travelling to England to attend additional wrestling schools. She trained at the Fight Factory Pro Wrestling (FFPW) gym, where she refined the technical and athletic foundations that would become central to her in-ring style. This period of training laid the groundwork for her transition into active competition on the European independent circuit.
Path to Professional Wrestling
Cusack made her professional debut on 2 May 2015 in a mixed tag team match alongside LJ Cleary for Celtic Cross Wrestling (CCW), defeating Katey Harvey and Michael Mayhem. Performing under the ring name Valkyrie Cain, named after the protagonist of Derek Landy’s Skulduggery Pleasant book series, she primarily faced Harvey across independent promotions in her native Ireland. By November 2016, she had begun teaming with Harvey in Pro Wrestling Unlimited (PWU), expanding her experience in tag team competition.
Valkyrie challenged for several women’s championships throughout 2017 and early 2018 without success, but her fortunes changed in 2018. In August, she pinned male wrestler Jordan Devlin in a six-way match to capture FFPW’s Irish Junior Heavyweight Championship, and the following month she defeated Lauren La Roux for the PWU Women’s Championship. In May 2019, she made her Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) debut during the Road to True Colors event in Bielefeld, defeating Amale Winchester and Killer Kelly in a Three-Way Dance. That same year, she debuted for Pro-Wrestling: EVE, teaming with Debbie Keitel as the Woke Queens and winning the promotion’s Tag Team Championship in October 2019.
Prior to her signing with WWE, Cusack participated in a WWE tryout in London in June 2019. She was reported to have signed with the company on 20 January 2020 and was assigned to NXT UK under the ring name Aoife Valkyrie, beginning a new chapter in her career.
Lyra Valkyria Career
Early Career (2015–2020)
Between 2015 and 2020, Valkyrie built a steady résumé across the European independent scene. Her early work for Celtic Cross Wrestling and Pro Wrestling Unlimited allowed her to develop as both a singles and tag team competitor. Championships with FFPW and PWU established her as a credible champion in her home country, while appearances in wXw and Pro-Wrestling: EVE broadened her international profile.
Her final independent appearances came in early 2020, including a victory over Katey Harvey in EVE on 1 February and a tag team loss in wXw on 8 March. These matches closed her independent career and prepared her for the structured environment of WWE’s developmental system.
NXT UK and NXT Breakthrough (2020–2024)
Cusack competed in her first match on the 13 February 2020 episode of NXT UK, defeating Amale. She toured with NXT in February 2020, wrestling house shows in Florida, and remained undefeated in televised competition until losing to Meiko Satomura on 29 April 2021. Later that year, she suffered a torn ACL that kept her out of action for roughly a year. After NXT UK closed in late 2022, she moved to the NXT brand under the new ring name Lyra Valkyria, defeating Amari Miller in her debut match on 13 December 2022.
Valkyria’s NXT momentum peaked in 2023. She competed in a ladder match for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT Stand & Deliver on 1 April 2023 and reached the finals of a tournament for the vacated title at NXT Battleground on 28 May, losing to Tiffany Stratton. After defeating Indi Hartwell and Roxanne Perez in a triple threat match, she defeated Becky Lynch at Night 1 of NXT: Halloween Havoc on 24 October to win the NXT Women’s Championship. She defended the title against Xia Li, Blair Davenport, and others before losing it to Perez at NXT Stand & Deliver on 6 April 2024, ending her reign at 165 days.
On Night 2 of the 2024 WWE Draft, Valkyria was promoted to the Raw brand. She made her main roster in-ring debut on 6 May 2024, defeating Dakota Kai in the first round of the Queen of the Ring tournament, before losing to Nia Jax in the finals at King and Queen of the Ring on 25 May.
Raw Era (2024–Present)
Valkyria competed in the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match on 6 July 2024, which was won by Tiffany Stratton. In December 2024, she entered the tournament for the inaugural Women’s Intercontinental Championship, defeating Kai in the finals on 13 January 2025 to become the inaugural champion. She entered her first women’s Royal Rumble match on 1 February 2025 at number 4, but was eliminated by Ivy Nile. Over the following months, she successfully defended the Intercontinental title against Kai, Nile, Raquel Rodriguez, and Bayley.
On 11 April 2025, Valkyria and Bayley won a gauntlet match to earn a shot at the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. At Night 2 of WrestleMania 41 on 20 April, after Bayley was attacked, Becky Lynch returned as her replacement partner, and the duo defeated Liv Morgan and Rodriguez to win the titles, making Valkyria a double champion. They lost the titles back to Morgan and Rodriguez the next night on Raw in a reign that lasted only one day, the shortest in the title’s history. On 10 May at Backlash, Valkyria defeated Lynch to retain the Intercontinental title. She lost the Intercontinental Championship to Lynch in a Last Chance match on 7 June at Money in the Bank, ending her reign at 145 days. At Evolution on 13 July, she failed to regain the title in a triple threat also involving Bayley. On 3 August at Night 2 of SummerSlam, she again failed to win the title in a no disqualification Last Chance match, ending her feud with Lynch.
