Meiko Satomura Bio

Meiko Satomura (里村 明衣子, Satomura Meiko; born November 17, 1979) is a Japanese retired professional wrestler. She is known for her time in the American promotion WWE and in the Japanese promotion Sendai Girls’ Pro Wrestling, where she served as a central figure for nearly two decades. Known in Japan as the “Yokozuna of the Women’s Wrestling World” and also called the “Final Boss” of women’s wrestling, she is recognized for her hard-hitting, traditionalist style and was trained by joshi legend Chigusa Nagayo.

Satomura competed for 30 years in Japan and internationally, working with promotions such as World Championship Wrestling (WCW), World Wonder Ring Stardom, and Chikara. She retired on April 29, 2025 at Korakuen Hall, closing out a career that helped define the modern era of women’s wrestling.

Early Life and Background

Meiko Satomura was born on November 17, 1979, in Niigata, Japan. Her hometown on the Sea of Japan coast placed her within easy reach of Tokyo, the heartland of Japanese professional wrestling, or joshi puroresu. From a young age, she was drawn to the athleticism and storytelling of the ring, and she set her sights on a career in wrestling.

Her path into the business was shaped by her trainer, Chigusa Nagayo, the iconic wrestler of the Crush Gals era and co-founder of Gaea Japan. Satomura moved to Tokyo to train under Nagayo, embracing a strict, traditionalist approach that emphasized striking, submissions, and shoot-style credibility. That foundation would become the trademark of her in-ring identity.

Path to Professional Wrestling

Satomura made her professional wrestling debut for the women’s promotion Gaea Japan on April 15, 1995, defeating Sonoko Kato. Her rapid progress was evident within months, and on November 2, 1996, she and Kato defeated Sugar Sato and Chikayo Nagashima to become the inaugural AAAW Tag Team Champions.

In 1996, while still early in her Gaea run, Satomura started appearing for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) through Gaea Japan’s working relationship with WCW, which was attempting to establish a women’s division. She entered the inaugural WCW Women’s World Championship tournament and was eliminated in the first round by eventual winner Akira Hokuto, and she was later knocked out in the first round of the WCW Women’s Cruiserweight Championship tournament by Toshie Uematsu. These international appearances signaled her rise from promising newcomer to global competitor.

Meiko Satomura Career

Early Career (1995–2005)

Satomura’s formative years were spent almost entirely in Gaea Japan, where she became one of the promotion’s most decorated stars. She won the AAAW Tag Team Championship on three occasions, teaming with Kato, Ayako Hamada, and Nagashima, and she captured the AAAW Singles Championship twice. Her second singles reign ended at the hands of Aja Kong on April 3, 2005.

When Gaea Japan closed a week later on April 10, 2005, Satomura defeated her trainer Chigusa Nagayo in the main event of the farewell show, symbolically passing the torch. It was a fitting end to a decade that established her as one of the most credible technicians in joshi puroresu.

Sendai Girls’ Pro Wrestling Breakthrough (2006–2018)

Following Gaea Japan’s closure, Satomura co-founded Sendai Girls’ Pro Wrestling with Jinsei Shinzaki, building a promotion that would become her home base. On September 23, 2009, she won the Splash J and Running G tournament, teaming with Kaoru and Tomoko Kuzumi to defeat the team of Hikari Fukuoka, Kanako Motoya, and Sonoko Kato in the final.

She also branched out internationally, debuting for Chikara during the promotion’s Aniversario in May 2012, and later winning the King of Trios tournament in 2016 alongside Cassandra Miyagi and Dash Chisako. On July 26, 2015, Satomura won the World of Stardom Championship by defeating Kairi Hojo, a title she held until December 23, 2015, when she dropped it to Io Shirai. Across these years she cemented her standing as a two-time Sendai Girls World Champion and one of the most respected figures in Japanese women’s wrestling.

WWE Era (2018–2025)

On July 27, 2018, WWE announced that Satomura would compete in the second Mae Young Classic tournament. She defeated Killer Kelly, Mercedes Martinez, and Lacey Lane before being eliminated in the semifinals by Toni Storm. The run introduced her to a global WWE audience and laid the groundwork for a longer relationship with the company.

On October 27, 2020, Satomura signed with WWE and became on-air talent and coach for NXT UK. She debuted on the February 11 episode of NXT UK, defeating Isla Dawn, and on June 10, 2021, she defeated Kay Lee Ray to win the NXT UK Women’s Championship, becoming the first Japanese wrestler to hold the title. She successfully defended the championship against Amale, Stevie Turner, Blair Davenport, and Isla Dawn over a reign that lasted 451 days as recognized by WWE. On the August 23, 2022 episode of NXT 2.0, she appeared on the main NXT brand and challenged Mandy Rose at Worlds Collide, where Rose won by pinning Davenport, ending Satomura’s title reign. Her final televised match in WWE was a July 27, 2024 bout against Bayley for the WWE Women’s Championship.

Style and Strengths

Satomura is best known for her hard-hitting, traditionalist approach, blending stiff strikes, shoot-style submissions, and credible mat wrestling. Notable Events and Milestones

Among her signature achievements, Satomura became the first Japanese NXT UK Women’s Champion and the inaugural AAAW Tag Team Champion. Her retirement tour included a February 2025 European farewell at Final Sting and her final bout on April 29, 2025, teaming with apprentice Manami to defeat Aja Kong and Chihiro Hashimoto.
