Mike Bennett Bio
Michael Bennett, known professionally as Mike Bennett, is an American professional wrestler born on May 16, 1985. He is signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and its sister promotion Ring of Honor (ROH), where he performs as one-half of the tag team The Kingdom alongside Matt Taven. Over a career that began in 2002, Bennett has competed across the American independent circuit, ROH, New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA, later Impact Wrestling), and WWE, where he was billed as Mike Kanellis.
Beyond the ring, Bennett co-owns a wrestling school in West Warwick, Rhode Island, with Taven. He is married to fellow professional wrestler Maria Kanellis, and the couple has two children.
Early Life and Background
Michael Bennett was born on May 16, 1985, in Carver, Massachusetts. He grew up in the same small Plymouth County town alongside an older brother, an older sister, and a younger brother. Bennett attended Carver High School, graduating in 2003. The school has since been reorganized and now operates as Carver Middle-High School.
While Bennett has not publicly detailed the precise moment he chose professional wrestling, his hometown region has long hosted active independent promotions, and he began appearing on local shows while still a teenager. Those early dates on the New England independent circuit laid the groundwork for a career that has now spanned more than two decades.
Path to Professional Wrestling
Bennett made his professional wrestling debut in 2002, working primarily on the New England independent circuit. He debuted for New England Championship Wrestling in November 2003 and, the following year, won the New England Wrestling Association Heavyweight Championship by defeating Brian Rogers. Those early title runs, paired with appearances in Top Rope Promotions, Eastern Pro Wrestling, and Squared Circle Wrestling, helped him develop an in-ring style built on brawling and confident promos.
By 2008, Bennett had caught the attention of Ring of Honor, making his debut in January of that year. After spending time working the U.S. independent scene and gaining exposure in 2CW, Chikara, and Northeast Wrestling, he signed a one-year contract with ROH in August 2010. A standout run in the Top Prospect Tournament, where he defeated Adam Cole, Andy Ridge, and Kyle O’Reilly to win the tournament, established him as a singles contender and paved the way for a long-term deal with the promotion.
Mike Bennett Career
Early Career (2002–2010)
Between 2002 and 2010, Bennett built a foundation on the independent circuit. He won the NEWA Heavyweight Championship in 2004, the TRP Tag Team Championship with Bryce Andrews in 2007, and the TRP Heavyweight Championship in 2009, holding the latter title through several successful defenses. He also captured the NRG Heavyweight Championship and won the 2006 Kowalski Cup tournament in Top Rope Promotions.
Outside the regional promotions, Bennett made a one-off appearance on WWE Heat in 2007, teaming with Bryce Andrews against Cryme Tyme, and worked a TNA dark match in 2009. He also debuted for Chikara in 2012 as part of Team ROH in the King of Trios tournament, reaching the finals before falling to the Spectral Envoy. By the time he signed his ROH contract, he was a polished performer ready for national exposure.
Ring of Honor (2008–2015)
Bennett made his Ring of Honor debut in January 2008 and quickly moved up the card. After signing a one-year deal in 2010, he won the Top Prospect Tournament and earned a shot at the ROH World Television Championship. He feuded with veteran Steve Corino and traded ROH World Television Championship matches with champion Jay Lethal through 2011 and 2012.
In 2013, Bennett turned heel, abandoned the “Mike Bennett” moniker in favor of “Michael Bennett,” and entered the ROH World Championship tournament. He aligned with manager “Brutal” Bob Evans and real-life girlfriend Maria Kanellis, eventually forming The Kingdom stable with Matt Hardy, Matt Taven, and Kanellis. On September 18, 2015, at All Star Extravaganza VII, Bennett and Taven won the ROH World Tag Team Championship by defeating The Addiction and The Young Bucks in a three-way match. They lost the title to War Machine at Final Battle in December 2015, and Bennett departed ROH shortly afterward when contract talks broke down.
New Japan Pro-Wrestling (2014–2015)
Through ROH’s working relationship with NJPW, Bennett made several tours of Japan. In May 2014, he lost to Hiroshi Tanahashi at the War of the Worlds event, and in August 2014, he teamed with Adam Cole to defeat Captain New Japan and Jyushin Thunder Liger. Bennett and Taven represented ROH and The Kingdom in the 2014 World Tag League, posting a 4–3 record that fell short of the finals.
On April 5, 2015, at Invasion Attack 2015, Bennett and Taven defeated Bullet Club to win the IWGP Tag Team Championship. The Kingdom held the IWGP Tag Team Championship for roughly three months before dropping it back to Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson at Dominion 7.5 in Osaka-jo Hall on July 5, 2015. They returned for the 2015 World Tag League but were eliminated in the round-robin stage.
Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2016–2017)
Bennett and Maria Kanellis debuted in TNA on the January 5, 2016 episode of Impact Wrestling. He quickly established himself in the X Division, defeating Eddie Edwards on the June 21, 2016 episode of Impact Wrestling to win the TNA X Division Championship. He dropped the title back to Edwards in an Ultimate X match two weeks later.
Bennett advanced to the finals of the Bound for Glory Playoff, where he lost to Ethan Carter III, and continued to feature in main-event storylines against Lashley, Moose, and Cody Rhodes. After declining to re-sign, Bennett and Kanellis departed TNA in March 2017.
WWE (2017–2020)
On June 18, 2017, Bennett debuted in WWE at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view alongside his wife, now billed as Mike Kanellis. He defeated Sami Zayn on the July 18 episode of SmackDown in his televised WWE debut match. After moving to Raw in the 2018 Superstar Shake-up and spending time on 205 Live, Kanellis won the WWE 24/7 Championship twice, his first titles in the company, including a memorable swap with Maria in an OB-GYN’s office storyline.
Kanellis requested his release from WWE in October 2019, briefly returned to 205 Live in early 2020, and was released on April 15, 2020, alongside Maria and several other Superstars as part of company-wide cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Return to ROH and Impact Wrestling (2020–2022)
After his WWE release, Bennett returned to the independent circuit, challenging Nick Aldis for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in September 2020. He made a one-off ROH television appearance on November 21, 2020, aiding Matt Taven, and was released by ROH on October 27, 2021, when the promotion went on hiatus.
Bennett resurfaced in Impact Wrestling at Hard To Kill on January 8, 2022, aligning with Maria, Taven, PCO, and Vincent. On September 1, 2022, Bennett and Taven defeated The Good Brothers to win the Impact World Tag Team Championship, but lost the titles to Heath and Rhino on October 20, 2022. The faction departed Impact shortly thereafter.
All Elite Wrestling and Ring of Honor (2022–Present)
Bennett debuted for All Elite Wrestling on the October 14, 2022, episode of Rampage with Taven and Maria. He returned to ROH at Final Battle in December 2022. In December 2023, Bennett and Taven, masked as “The Devil’s Masked Men,” defeated MJF in a handicap match to win the ROH World Tag Team Championship for a third time. At Worlds End, they unmasked and formed the Undisputed Kingdom stable with Adam Cole, Roderick Strong, and Wardlow.
The Kingdom successfully defended the ROH World Tag Team Championship against The Infantry at Supercard of Honor in April 2024, but lost the titles to Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara on August 17, 2024. Bennett and the Undisputed Kingdom turned babyface in October 2024, reigniting their feud with MJF. On November 8, 2024, Bennett and Taven returned to NJPW at Fighting Spirit Unleashed, losing to Shingo Takagi and Yota Tsuji. In May 2025, Bennett and Taven reunited as “The Kingdom” on ROH Wrestling.

Bennett works a power-based style built around strikes, brawling, and a methodical pace in the ring. He has long relied on managerial support, first from “Brutal” Bob Evans and later from his wife Maria Kanellis, to handle promos and outside interference.
