Early Life and Background
Shelton James Benjamin was born on July 9, 1975, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He began wrestling during his sophomore year at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, where he achieved a remarkable 122–10 win-loss record and became a two-time state champion. After high school, he attended Lassen Community College in California, where he excelled in both wrestling and track and field, winning National Junior College Athletic Association championships. He later transferred to the University of Minnesota, where he achieved All-American status in wrestling.
Path to All Elite Wrestling
Benjamin started his professional wrestling career in 2000 after signing with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He was trained in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), where he formed a tag team with Brock Lesnar, known as the Minnesota Stretching Crew. Their success in OVW led to Benjamin’s debut on the main roster in 2002, where he quickly gained recognition for his athleticism and in-ring skills.
