Swerve Strickland Bio

Stephon Strickland (born September 30, 1990) is an American professional wrestler and rapper. He is signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he performs under the ring name Swerve Strickland. Strickland has also performed across the independent circuit, including international promotions, and has worked as both an in-ring performer and a creative voice for his characters. He has held the AEW World Championship, AEW World Tag Team Championship, MLW World Heavyweight Championship, Evolve Championship, and CZW World Heavyweight Championship, establishing himself as one of the most decorated performers of his generation.

Early Life and Background

Stephon Strickland was born in Tacoma, Washington on September 30, 1990. He is the cousin of former National Football League linebacker Fred Strickland. His father, who was a sergeant first class cook in the United States Army, moved the family to Germany when Strickland was two months old to live on a U.S. military base in Frankfurt. Strickland spent the first seven years of his life in Germany before the family returned to the United States and settled in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, where he attended Donegal High School. He danced in talent shows and excelled in football, basketball, and track and field, showing an early blend of athletic and performance ability.

Shortly after graduating high school, Strickland felt the need to follow in his father’s footsteps and enlisted in the United States Army Reserve at the age of 17. He completed his Basic Training in South Carolina, then underwent 22 weeks of Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. He was then stationed in York, Pennsylvania, where he served as a 25U Signal Support Systems Specialist for eight years. Strickland left the Reserve in 2015, and he has often credited the discipline of military service with shaping his approach to professional wrestling.

Path to Professional Wrestling

Strickland decided to become a professional wrestler when he was 18 years old, while still serving in the United States Army Reserve. He began training at Ground Xero Wrestling Training Academy in August 2008, balancing his Army Reserve commitments in York, Pennsylvania with bookings around the Maryland and Pennsylvania independent circuit. The demands of his military service kept him largely on the regional scene during his earliest years in the business, where he built a reputation for hard-hitting matches and a high-energy athletic style.

His first appearances on a national stage came in 2011, when he debuted with the National Wrestling Alliance, followed by work for the East Coast Wrestling Association in 2012. In September 2011, Strickland made his first appearance with the NWA, losing to Phil Brown, and in March 2012, he defeated Alex Payne in his debut for East Coast Wrestling Association. These early appearances marked the transition from local training grounds to a wider stage, and laid the foundation for his move into promotions like Combat Zone Wrestling and Evolve Wrestling.

Swerve Strickland Career

Early Career (2008–2017)

Strickland’s professional career began in 2008 on the independent circuit. He made his Combat Zone Wrestling debut in February 2012, where he worked his way up through the Best of the Best tournament and feuds with A. R. Fox, Alex Colon, and Joe Gacy. He won the CZW Wired TV Championship for the first time in March 2014 and later captured the CZW World Heavyweight Championship in 2017, cementing his reputation as a top-flight independent wrestler.

Alongside his CZW work, Strickland competed in Evolve Wrestling, Westside Xtreme Wrestling in Germany, and several other promotions. In 2016, he won the wXw World Tag Team League with David Starr, beating established teams such as Ringkampf and Moustache Mountain. He won the Evolve Championship in August 2018 by defeating Matt Riddle before losing the title to Fabian Aichner, and he also held both the PCW Ultra Light Heavyweight and PCW Ultra Heavyweight Championships simultaneously in 2018.

Lucha Underground Breakthrough (2014–2018)

Strickland became a central character on the El Rey Network television series Lucha Underground, appearing in every season. He portrayed the character of Lt. Jermaine Strickland, a military veteran who carried dog tags to honor his fallen comrades, and wrestled under a mask as Killshot. In the first season, he aligned with Big Ryck and Willie Mack, reaching the finals of a tournament for the LU Trios Championship before being eliminated.

In Season 2, Killshot began a feud with Marty Martinez, culminating in a Weapon of Mass Destruction match in which Killshot was victorious. He later engaged in a storyline with A. R. Fox, a former brother in arms, and the two won the Trios Championship together. By Season 4, Killshot lost a mask versus mask match to Son of Havoc, unmasking as Lt. Jermaine Strickland and exiting the Lucha Underground temple in a memorable farewell.

Major League Wrestling (2017–2019)

Strickland debuted in Major League Wrestling on October 5, 2017, defeating Ricochet in the main event of MLW’s One Shot. On April 12, 2018, he defeated Matt Riddle to win an eight-man tournament and the vacant MLW World Heavyweight Championship. He held the title for 91 days and engaged in a heated rivalry with Low Ki before losing the championship, and he later feuded with Sami Callihan in a brutal street fight.

Strickland’s time in MLW ended in late 2018 after a worked shoot promo aimed at MLW management, in which he symbolically terminated his contract on television. His last regular MLW appearance came in January 2019, and he returned briefly to the promotion in March 2022 at the Intimidation Games event, aligning with Cesar Duran in a losing effort for the MLW World Middleweight Championship.

WWE NXT Era (2019–2021)

On April 17, 2019, Strickland signed a developmental contract with WWE and began working at the WWE Performance Center under the ring name Isaiah “Swerve” Scott. In February 2021, he turned heel and eventually formed the stable Hit Row with Top Dolla, Ashante “Thee” Adonis, and B-FAB.

On the June 29, 2021, episode of NXT, Scott defeated Bronson Reed to win the NXT North American Championship, his first title in WWE. He held the championship for 105 days before losing it to Carmelo Hayes. As part of the 2021 Draft, Hit Row was moved to the SmackDown brand, but the group was released from their contracts on November 18, 2021, ending Strickland’s tenure with WWE.

All Elite Wrestling Era (2022–Present)

On March 6, 2022, Strickland signed with All Elite Wrestling, debuting under the new name Swerve Strickland at the Revolution pay-per-view event. He made his in-ring AEW debut on the March 11 episode of Rampage, defeating Tony Nese, and quickly aligned himself with Keith Lee to form the tag team Swerve In Our Glory. The duo won the AEW World Tag Team Championship at Dynamite: Fyter Fest Night 1 in July 2022 before eventually losing the titles to The Acclaimed at Grand Slam in a critically praised series.

In December 2022, Strickland turned on Keith Lee and formed the Mogul Affiliates, later merging with Prince Nana’s Embassy to create the Mogul Embassy stable. After a high-profile feud with Darby Allin, Sting, and later “Hangman” Adam Page, Strickland captured the AEW World Championship by defeating Samoa Joe at Dynasty, becoming the first recognized African-American AEW World Champion. He defended the title against Christian Cage at Double or Nothing and against Will Ospreay at Forbidden Door before losing to Bryan Danielson at All In: London in August 2024, ending a 126-day reign. At All In: London, it was reported that Strickland re-signed with AEW on a multi-year deal, and he returned from injury at Full Gear in November 2025 to confront Samoa Joe following his title victory over Adam Page.

Style and Strengths

Strickland is known for his explosive athleticism, hard-hitting strikes, and a strong aerial arsenal that includes a springboard 450 splash finishing move. His character work, often rooted in themes of ambition and self-made success, has been central to his appeal, and his storytelling ability allows him to adapt to both villainous and heroic roles. He is recognized for his ability to pace long matches, blend mat wrestling with high-flying offense, and elevate opponents in the ring.
