After suffering an injury, Whitney adopted the persona of Dr. Thomas, an Anger Management Specialist who managed the tag team Bolin Services to the OVW tag team titles. On June 27, 2007, he debuted a masked gimmick called Prodigy, but was released from his WWE developmental contract on August 9, 2007. He returned to the independent circuit in late 2007, winning the MWF Television Championship in September 2007. In 2011, he won the ECWA Super 8 Tournament, defeating Adam Cole in the finals.

Ring of Honor Breakthrough (2011–2015)

In January 2011, Ciampa began working regularly for Ring of Honor (ROH), defeating Mike Sydal in his first televised match.
