WWE NXT Champion Joe Hendry has shared insights into the unique relationship he has cultivated with fans since signing with WWE in October. His bond with the audience has grown stronger through his performances and prior appearances under WWE’s partnership with TNA.
Hendry’s visibility and popularity have surged over recent years, and his connection with fans remains a cornerstone of his success inside the ring. Speaking with TMZ’s Inside The Ring, he described how his fans’ support has helped him manage the pressures of performing on big stages like SmackDown.
How Fan Support Eased His SmackDown Debut
During his debut appearance on SmackDown, Hendry performed a fast-paced parody song, a challenging act requiring precise timing and memorization, especially under pressure. He recalled the moment when a fan’s enthusiastic recognition helped calm his nerves instantly.
“I had just done a song for NXT that week, and I was doing a song for SmackDown as well, and there’s a pressure to not forget the words. I was doing a version of Jingle Bells, and it’s pretty fast,”
Hendry explained.
He added,
“Usually my parody songs are ‘you make a joke, audience reaction, then the next joke, audience reaction’, so you have time to think. Whereas Jingle Bells is, you know it’s fast. The pressure’s there, and I’m like this is my SmackDown debut, I must deliver.”
Developing the story, Hendry shared how the crowd’s warm welcome transformed his experience:
“So I’m going out there with the pressure, I’m standing on the ring, and I just saw, there was a fan in the audience who pointed at me and said ‘yay, it’s Joe Hendry!’ and it started to spread, and the audience having that warm reception for me that just took away any nerves or self doubts or anything like that.”
The Impact of Fan Connection on His Performance
Hendry said the support from fans makes him feel like they are on a journey together, which enhances his performances and motivates him. He emphasized that this relationship produces a real and meaningful impact every time he steps into the ring, creating a genuine connection beyond just the entertainment.
“So the relationship I have with the fans is they’re with me on this journey, that’s what’s special about it, it feels like we’re doing it together. It’s this really real connection that has a real-life outcome, when they get behind me it makes my performances better, so I’m super thankful for the connection we’ve built.”
But really, it’s the song. The song’s the thing that kicked it off.
