WWE Vet Claims Bryan Danielson Didn’t Draw Ratings as Champ

Bryan Danielson, widely celebrated for his compelling wrestling style and immense popularity, faced criticism from WWE veteran Vince Russo regarding his effectiveness as a main-event superstar. Russo highlighted that despite Danielson’s success, notably reaching the main event at WrestleMania 30 and winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, the move did not translate into higher television ratings during his reign.

During a recent episode of The Coach and Bro Show, Vince Russo argued that WWE’s decision to crown Danielson as champion failed to attract casual viewers. He implied that although Danielson garnered strong support from hardcore fans, this niche appeal was insufficient to boost ratings or overall audience engagement.

“He basically said the people, the marks, the niche audience got behind Daniel Bryan ok. Here is the reality of the situation guys and you can go back and look, when they put the belt on Daniel Bryan, bro they were not drawing ratings. So they listen to more crowd, they listen to their niche audience, Bryan Daniel did not draw, great freakin wrestler, great human being, I love the guy, the reality of the situation, he did not draw as a champion. Why? because the casuals didn’t buy it.” -[28:57-29:38]

Russo’s comments point to a larger challenge WWE has faced with converting enthusiastic wrestling fans into broader television audiences during Danielson’s championship run.

Danielson Hints at Possible Return to In-Ring Competition

Currently serving as a commentator for All Elite Wrestling (AEW), Bryan Danielson opened up about the possibility of resuming his in-ring career. He explained that after seeking treatment from a physical therapist recommended by AEW’s Adam Copeland, Danielson experienced significant improvements in his physical health and sleep quality, which could influence his future wrestling plans.

“I don’t close it off. Maybe. In April of 2025, Adam Copeland sent me to his physical therapist. He said the guy was a miracle worker. This guy worked on me for 2 days in a row, 6 hours each day. After the first night, I slept 9 hours straight. After the second night, I slept 8 hours straight. After that, I was sleeping 7 or 8 hours almost every night. That’s a game changer for how you feel,” said Danielson [H/T Drainmaker on X]

Danielson’s comments suggest that while his in-ring future remains uncertain, improved health could pave the way for a possible return to wrestling with AEW.

Implications for WWE and Wrestling Audiences

The dispute over Danielson’s drawing power as WWE champion underscores the tension between niche wrestling fans and the casual audience that drives television ratings. Vince Russo’s critique highlights the difficulty in appealing beyond core fans, which has significant consequences for WWE’s business and storytelling strategies. For Bryan Danielson, the dialogue around his impact reinforces how wrestling success is measured not only in fan admiration but also by broader market appeal.

Looking ahead, Danielson’s potential re-entry into AEW’s active roster could reignite interest among wrestling enthusiasts, while WWE continues to seek talent who can attract both dedicated viewers and casual fans. How these developments unfold will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and wrestling audiences alike.
