Cordeiro Returns to Hawaii: A Homecoming Amidst Change

Cordeiro Returns to Hawaii: In a poignant twist of fate, quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, who left the University of Hawaii’s football team, is returning to his former home state as the starting quarterback for San Jose State. This Saturday’s game, coinciding with UH’s homecoming week, marks Cordeiro’s first appearance in Hawaii since his departure.

Cordeiro’s exit from UH in 2021 came as a shock to fans and teammates alike. His decision to enter the transfer portal was influenced by the demanding coaching style of then-head coach Todd Graham. Cordeiro, a respected two-time UH captain, wasn’t alone; he was among the 19 players who departed the program. Their exits became catalysts for change. Graham resigned, and former record-setting quarterback Timmy Chang stepped in as the new head coach, igniting a period of transformation for the Rainbow Warriors.

For Cordeiro, it was a personal journey. He admitted to losing the joy of football under Graham’s leadership. Despite the challenges, he made the brave decision to leave, a move that, unexpectedly, played a role in reshaping UH’s culture.

Amidst this upheaval, wide receiver Jonah Panoke chose a different path. He opted to remain a Rainbow Warrior, citing “family reasons.” Panoke’s commitment to staying highlighted the sense of unity and solidarity among the players who weathered the storm together. The phrase “Braddahhood,” coined during this tumultuous period, symbolized their resilience and determination to rebuild, even without a clear vision of the future.
