Tragedy Strikes in San Jose Parents: In August, tragedy struck a San Jose family as their 18-month-old daughter succumbed to fentanyl and methamphetamine poisoning. The grim incident led to murder charges against the parents, 27-year-old Derek Vaughn Rayo and 28-year-old Kelly Jean Richardson. San Jose Police responded to a distress call at their residence on Huddersfield Court, discovering the lifeless child. The Homicide Unit found fentanyl and drug paraphernalia in the home, indicating a dangerous scenario.
Both parents were found to have fentanyl and other opioids in their systems at the time of their daughter’s demise. Disturbing details emerged from seized electronic devices, showcasing text messages and social media posts illustrating narcotic use in the presence of the child. Shockingly, the parents allegedly encouraged others to leave drugs in accessible areas, posing a significant risk to the toddler.
On November 21, Derek Vaughn Rayo, already in custody on an unrelated warrant, faced a homicide warrant for his daughter’s death. Kelly Jean Richardson, the other primary suspect, remains at large, intensifying the ongoing investigation. This case marks a poignant moment for the Santa Clara County DA’s Office, as it’s the first instance of charging parents for the murder of their child in a fentanyl-related incident.
This tragic event adds to San Jose’s 2023 homicide count, highlighting the devastating impact of substance abuse on vulnerable lives. In a separate case the previous month, another San Jose father faced charges of felony child neglect after his 3-month-old infant ingested a lethal dose of fentanyl and methamphetamine. The plea for information from the police underscores the importance of community cooperation in ensuring justice for the innocent victims.
