San Jose Holiday Extravaganza: Bars Turn Magical, Skaters Glide, and Small Businesses Shine

San Jose Holiday Extravaganza: As Thanksgiving approaches, San Jose is already embracing the Christmas spirit with open arms. In the heart of downtown, Paper Plane has undergone a magical transformation, turning the bar into a festive wonderland that stretches from the floor to the ceiling.

Benny Sarpolio, the operations manager, revealed that it took a dedicated decorating team and a skilled lighting crew three days to create what they now proudly call “Miracle on 1st Street.” This enchanting display is part of a global tradition where bars, including Paper Plane’s sister location MINIBOSS, participate in Christmas pop-ups, offering holiday drinks in special cups.

Sarpolio shared, “This is probably one of the busier nights of our year. Everyone’s in town from far and wide—they want to go out and feel festive, and this is the perfect place to do it.”

But the festive spirit doesn’t stop at the bar. Just across town, skaters are lacing up their boots to enjoy the ice rink, a beloved holiday tradition back by popular demand. Meanwhile, workers are adding the finishing touches to Christmas in the Park, where the 44th annual celebration is set to kick off on Friday at 6 p.m.

In the spirit of giving, Christmas trees have been trucked in from Oregon, ready to be adorned with holiday cheer. And for those with shopping on their agenda, local owners are gearing up for Small Business Saturday.

Lynna Choi, owner of Woofboard in San Pedro Square, is preparing her unique offerings for dog lovers—a delightful array of dog charcuterie boards. “Everyone loves charcuterie boards, right? I’m a millennial, so we love our cheese boards. I thought it was a fun way to celebrate that love for charcuterie boards with our dogs,” Choi said.

Choi emphasizes that all treats are sourced from fellow small businesses, ensuring they are natural and preservative-free. Her store, like many others in the area, features products from small businesses, offering a selection you won’t find in big box stores.

Nguyen proudly notes that the Tiny Keyboards Shop is among the first brick-and-mortar stores with tech accessories, providing customers with a hands-on experience that online shopping can’t match.

This weekend, Choi and others will showcase their products at the SJ Made Holiday Fair at the Santa Clara Convention Center, where 400 vendors of small businesses will gather.
