Race for Assembly District 26 Heats Up: In the midst of a changing political landscape with Congresswoman Anna Eshoo’s retirement, one of the most anticipated races is emerging in Assembly District 26. The potential departure of incumbent Assemblymember Evan Low, eyeing Eshoo’s congressional seat, has triggered a competitive field.

Three contenders have already entered the race for Low’s seat, reflecting the diversity of backgrounds and experiences. Patrick Ahrens, Evan Low’s district director for the past five years and a member of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees, is stepping into the arena. Ahrens, 34, brings a wealth of experience and has garnered endorsements from notable figures, including county Supervisors Cindy Chavez and Susan Ellenberg.

Another formidable candidate is Tara Sreekrishnan, a 30-year-old member of the Santa Clara County Board of Education and deputy chief of staff and legislative director for state Sen. Dave Cortese. Sreekrishnan is also the co-founder of Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action, emphasizing a commitment to addressing critical issues like affordable housing, homelessness, and education.

Adding a unique perspective to the race is Sunnyvale Vice Mayor Omar Din, 26, the youngest and first South Asian and Muslim elected to the Sunnyvale City Council. Din, also a governing member of the VTA board of directors, boasts accomplishments such as creating a bus route for North Sunnyvale students and initiating a guaranteed basic income pilot program.

All three candidates share a common goal of addressing pressing issues within District 26, which covers Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Santa Clara, and parts of San Jose. The race is unfolding as a blend of experience, innovation, and dedication to the diverse needs of the community.
