Santa Clara County Unites for World AIDS Day: As the world marks the 35th anniversary of World AIDS Day, Santa Clara County stands at the forefront of commemorative efforts. The theme for this year, “Let Communities Lead,” champions the crucial role of those impacted by HIV in shaping the strategies to end the pandemic. From November 28 to December 1, a series of events will unfold, inviting public participation to pay tribute to the lives affected by HIV and AIDS.
With a staggering global statistic of over 36 million lives lost to AIDS-related illnesses, the focus remains on local efforts, especially in Santa Clara County, which houses 3,770 individuals living with HIV as of 2022. A notable disparity emerges as Hispanic and Latino demographics, constituting 25 percent of the population, bear 60 percent of new HIV diagnoses, according to the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department.

Local leaders, including Gordon Bowman, Chair of the Santa Clara County HIV Commission, spearhead initiatives to combat this crisis. Reflecting on World AIDS Day, Bowman, who wears multiple hats as a nurse with expertise in HIV/AIDS, expressed a bittersweet sentiment. “Today, with the different hats that I wear, both as a nurse with a specialty in HIV/AIDS and my involvement with the HIV Commission, I feel blessed to be part of the fight. It is amazing the advances we have made over the years in the treatment options for HIV,” Bowman shared.
Advancements continue through programs like the HIV and Aging Program, providing crucial support for individuals over 50 affected by HIV. Dr. Akanksha Vaidya, Assistant Health Officer and HIV/STI Controller at the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department, emphasizes the growing population of older adults living with HIV and AIDS, attributing it to improved medication and services that increase life expectancy.
