Miss Nicaragua Pageant Director Resigns Amid Controversy and Charges

Miss Nicaragua Pageant Director Resigns: The director of the Miss Nicaragua pageant, Karen Celebertti, has resigned from her position just one week after facing charges of conspiracy and treason from the country’s national police. The charges, also involving her husband and son, accuse them of being part of a plot to overthrow the government. This shocking development follows the groundbreaking victory of Sheynnis Palacios at Miss Universe 2023, where she became Nicaragua’s first-ever titleholder.

In a statement posted on her Instagram account, Celebertti announced her retirement without directly addressing the accusations against her. She expressed her dedication to promoting Nicaragua and emphasized her transparent and professional approach during her 23 years leading the Miss Nicaragua pageant.

The charges against Celebertti are linked to the anti-government unrest in 2018, triggered by social security changes, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of protesters. The Nicaraguan government labeled these demonstrations as “terrorism” and an “attempted coup.” Police asserted that Celebertti was involved in this alleged coup attempt and accused her of using beauty pageants for political purposes, allegedly financed by foreign agents.

Celebertti’s resignation has been accepted by the Miss Universe Organization, which stands by its commitment to transparency and integrity. The organization expressed hope for a peaceful resolution of the issues raised by Nicaragua and highlighted its support for Sheynnis and Karen.

While Celebertti remains in Mexico, her husband and son have been detained in Nicaragua since November 27. The Miss Universe Organization and Anne Jakrajutatip, the founder of JKN Global Group, which owns Miss Universe, have voiced support for Celebertti, acknowledging her strength and bravery in the face of adversity. The situation unfolds against the backdrop of political turmoil and uncertainty for the future of the Miss Nicaragua pageant.
